Why should apple make it this difficult...I'm sorry but from what I've read on reviews it just seems a waste of $600.

i dont think its a waste dude. most complaints ive heard are all software related so they'll address a bunch of stuff pretty quickly.

BP's a business guy and the iPhone's a rad gadget not quite a business specific device like a blackberry. so given that he's got special needs and different corporate & email security stuff to deal with. This wont apply to folks who just use it for personal stuff & non critical email

i run an egineering team and i/we have a bunch of servers that let me/us know when they're on the fritz or some other monitoring server lets me know. so for me a 15 minute delay is way too long... i cant afford downtime

if i didnt have servers to deal with id like to get one

This is where I'm at.

Reading the Manual for the Sun Mail Server. Playing catch up right now. I was pretty familiar with our old qmail server but when we went Sun, it worked and hasn't had any hiccups. Hence, haven't had a reason to peak under the hood.

In a nutshell I'm looking at two options.
Get employees the ability to send mail through EB's send mail server.
That entails getting SSL and user authentication for SMTP working, at a minimum.

I'm also trying to get info from Synchronica

They're swamped with requests and lag on responding to inquiries. Right now they offer a 30 day trial for iPhone users, but I think it's limited to those who work for companies running Microsoft Exchange. Their service supposedly gives iPhone users push capabilities like a blackberry has. I'm not all that certain we really need it though. The service does work with Sun's Mail server though and they are partnered with Sun. I think Synchronica is focusing on Exchange users right now though. They sent me an email with the link to get things going on the trial. Haven't tried it cause I don't have an iPhone in hand and not sure I could walk our iPhone users through setting it up over the phone or by Instant Messenger. Plus if there was a problem everything is so new. The iPhone users are far away from me and are just getting to know their phones. I wouldn't easily know if the problem is with the service or the user :) So I'm not sure a trial would be objective and get a fair shake.

However, if I can get SMTP working then I imagine the iPhone email program is like any other email program where you can change how frequently it checks for mail. If the iPhone was set to check mail every 30 secs or 1 minute or whatever, would you actually be able to tell the difference between that and push? I want to make sure it's a valid service and not just a service that exists solely to profit off iPhone hype.

I think the major advantage with Synchronica's service though is it would keep the iPhone calendar in sync with our users Sun Calendars. But most of our users don't use their calendars and those that do I don't think have iPhones. I could see the Calendars being used more though if it was easily accessible to users, like via an iPhone.

Blah, blah, words, words. I think that is more than enough to confuse everyone except all the EB playing IT people in this forum :)
