1st of all..... Since Im without an amp I have found that I really like the effects and stuff I can do with garage band. Yes I'm sure there are other programs out there that would be better than this but Im broke..

Anyways I would like to run my bass through my laptop for effects and graphic eq and stuff. Problem is there is a bit of a delay depending on the effect I use... What can I do to fix this? I only have 1 gb of ram and I have A 120GB HARD DRIVE..

In GarageBand's preferences, under Audio/Midi, set the "Optimize for" radio button to "minimum delay". That's about as good as it gets with Garageband - you don't really have any sort of granular control over the buffers...

Yea I tried that, thanks anyways!!! It works pretty good with the setting I love the most, that is the round setting. Hard to tell when playing finger style but its easily noticeable when slapping.. Not that I really do that at a gig anyways..

What are you using for your input? That is, what is your bass running through before it gets to your Mac?

I have a MacBook and 20" iMac at home and have done a few recordings with them and ran into this problem, but also found a solution.

Let me know your specs and I'll tinker with my setup tonight.

ya - besides the settings and the firewire vs usb stuff there's not a whole lot you can do.

my maudio installs a preference pane control as well. with my setup when my latency gets more noticable i go to the maudio pane under system preferences and hit the reset button. i have no idea what that does but it helps me a bunch

If you get good results with this method, I applaud you but if you want to get serious about recording, get something with some real controls.

Take a look at some of the M-Audio stuff at Guitar Center (if you have one nearby). The techs in the recording dept's at the GC's around here are very knowledgeable.

perhaps you should take a look at line6 toneport gx.. its usb based, dead cheap, has some bass emulations (cabinets and amps) and it has very low latency because of their monitoring system

c&p from their pages:

ToneDirect™ monitoring allows you to monitor a fully processed signal with extremely low latency – regardless of the buffer size of your recording application. This means that there is an incredibly small delay between when you play a note and when you actually hear the sound from your speakers. This is unusual among audio interfaces because with other more traditional monitoring solutions, you either have to:

- listen to processed audio with significant latency – often such that it is hard to play along with what you are recording

or

- listen to a signal with no processing. It's uninspiring to say the least to hear completely dry electric guitar with no amp, cab, or effect processing.
