I have to learn this song for a gig I am doing. I have never tried swing stuff and I would not be much of a Jazz fan mainly because I have never had the chance to listen to either.

But this is one sticky wee bass line, its taking a while to nail it down but it is a lot of fun playing.

I had to cheat on this one and get the tab for it and even then its still tricky.

If anybody has any other good walking bass songs let me know, I would really like to get my head around this style.

Cheers
Dave

PS just to bring this back to EBMM !!! My SR5 kills this song....mids cut a wee bit bass pushed a tad,Mark Bass eq pretty flat and it sounds just super spiffing !!

I always loved Freddie the Freeloader myself.

Funny, I had the opposite experience with jazz bass playing. Jazz was all I was exposed to in my early bass days, and honestly... I kind of got soured on it, for a number of reasons.

Its more the Jazz players i dont get,and i really dont mean to offend anyone. But every Jazz player I have played with has been so full of themselves its unreal. Our current Keyboard player is studying jazz and it a very good player,he knows every scale and jazz run, however he cant fill in or busk along with a song unless he brings it home to sudy it.And he acts like he is the best player in the world, and playing in a wedding band is so below him, even though we are paying him more than twice what he gets in his sunday jazz session.

he is very typical of the standard of Jazz players i have played with or even meet up with.

Hey Dave, here are two examples that may help you:

Of course, these aren't the only options for accompanying those tunes. There are lots of possibilities, so don't be afraid to try and experiment. :)

"Blue Bossa" is a fun bass tune -- and the bossa nova feel is cool to play.

I started out as a rock player (still am) but play a lot of jazz now. I'm not a "know all the modes" guy but I can think on my feet and get a good feel so I get by.

I agree that some jazz players do have bad attitudes, but there are lots of good folks too -- especially the older generation that grew up with a love of it. I've had a blast jamming with some uncles and cousins who pull out jazz tunes the way we might pull out "not fade away".

Here's a thought on Swing feel: it's really just playing eighth notes, but instead of making them even, imagine that for each pair of eighths, one them is 2/3 of the beat (it's a little longer) and the other is 1/3 of the beat (a little shorter), and play them with that emphasis.

have fun with it!

First post...

Ed Friedland has a book called "Building Walking Bass Lines" that is top notch. I never "got" the whole walking bass line thing in my head. But the lightbulb came on pretty quick (if not terribly bright, but that's just me) thanks in no small part to that book.
