So how does this MySpace thing work in a nutshell? What's so good about it.
Well it has a number of good uses. I use my personal myspace page to add friends and bands that I like, so I can find out about upcoming shows, album releases, etc. and it allows me to quickly link onto their pages to get info and find out what they're up to (though I assume you could also bookmark their sites). My page has also allowed me to reconnect with some old friends I'd lost track of over the years, as I am now a searchable entity on t'internet.
As for the band myspace pages, I have found them to be extremely useful to help gain/increase your fanbase, as it allows potential fans to listen to/download your music and decide whether they want to come and see you when you play their neighbourhoods. Also a lot of promoters and venues have myspace pages, so you can obtain gigs using myspace (I have been contacted "out of the blue" by venues/promoters in the past), and having a myspace page can be useful for self promotion, so you no longer need to send out demos/biographies, you can simply refer them to your myspace page. Also I assume if you have a lot of friends on there, it gives promoters/venues a (very) rough estimate of what kind of crowd you are likely to pull. And on the off chance I don't want to lug my gear to a particular venue, I have looked up the myspace pages of other bands on the bill for that gig to enquire about borrowing gear, sharing drum kits/cabs, etc. So IMO myspace pages can be very useful for a gigging band.
