A few years ago when I moved to Canberra 94 - 95ish form California (Dad is in the Air Force so we moved around a bit, I came back to Aus with my mum as the folks split up while in the US). The first friend I had was a chap called Lincoln, some Canberra & Sydney siders may have heard of his mums band way back when called Hot Property ( I know, I know...there is probably hundreds of bands called Hot Property). Their guitarist had a Luke guitar in the Luke Blue colour...nice guitar!
Anyway, back to the story.
Lincolns fav. band was/is Crowded House, and his idol....Paul Hester their drummer. (Lincoln is the main contributor to the Crowded House Wikipedia blog thingy...) Linc had a deep love for Hester, Crowded House etc.... any other muso would know the level of dedication each muso has to their fav artist....same with me worshipping Brian May. Years later Linc moved away from Canberra, I heard on the news that Paul Hester had hung himself etc... a day or two later I logged onto MSN and noticed that Lincoln had logged on. I told him I was sorry about the news , Lincoln asked me what news?? I asked him if he had heard, seen or read the news in the last twenty four hours? He replied no....I couldn't bare to tell him the news so I found the news.com link and sent it to him....but for some reason none of the links I sent him would work. He ended up getting fed up and just asked me to tell him of what had happened, I told him what had happened to Paul Hester...I felt so bad being the one that told him the news.
He wrote back to me and said you know what else happened yeterday? I told him "I have no idea...." He said it was his (Lincs) birthday that day.....my mates idol committed suicide on his birthday birthday! I will never forget that!
One of the other first friends of mine from Canberra, Gareth is a huge V8 supercars fan and idolised racing legend(s) Peter Brock & Craig Lowndes. I missed Gareth's 21st party due to girlfriend drama's and to this day I am extremely sorry. so when ever he wants to have a dig at me he mentions the 21st that I didn't make it to due to the circumstances at the time.
Fast forward to 2006
Sept 5th Steve Irwin died.
I remember Gareth calling me up on September 8th and telling me that Peter Brock had passed away.....I didn't believe him at first, as I thought he was calling for another reason. I was at work at the time and looked up the news site and sure enough the unthinkable had happened...I replied to him, you know what else happened today? he said no....I told him that it was my birthday!
It is weird.....the birthdays seem more like markers in time of events that changed peoples lives....as well as being a "birth"day.
Gareth is getting married next week (15th) at which I am the best man and his bucks party is on the....8th my birthday so we will be having a drink for everybody with us and those that have passed on.
I know this little rant is obviously a personal account of some events but just thought I would share them!
