I find the French comments as funny as everyone else. But I thought that I might remind all of us Yanks of a little American History. The American Revolution was greatly aided by French support cultivated by Benjamin Franklin. They supplied naval support, arms, troops on the ground and training. America did not have the needed industrial base to fully support the revolution's requirements.

A French business man, Steven Girard, provided a lot of the financing to support our "second revolution" the War of 1812.

Like them, or not, the French and Americans have been partners in the obtainment of the freedoms we share today. Without their help, there may not have been a USA like we know it today to reciprocate and rescue them early in the 20th Century.

Just somes thoughts.

Edit: I meant to say that I agree with everone's comments about the Youtube guy. What a jerk!

FYI, I put these in the bass forum since the French comments were in the bass forum posts.

I know that.

I just find history fascinating and I never realized the level of French support until the last few years. Of course, I doubt our freedom was the motivator. We were a market for arms and the colonies also served as a location for a war by proxy against the British.

Yep, the British set a torch to it. I can't remember the First Lady's name, but she had a lot to do with saving many priceless treasures from the fire. I Dolly Madison was the first lady. There was something on TV recently about her.

Let's please not digress.

Rude is rude...No matter where it comes from.

It took a lot of courage for a small group of people to stand up against the most powerful (at that time) military in history. And to put it into perspective, the French aid did come after hostilities were initiated. I don't want to discount in any way the valor of those early Americans. It's just that the aid of the French was crucial for our final success.

Please ignore the title. I mistook Mike comments as directed to the opinions of posters on this forum. I realize he meant the French man's comments. I agree that they were rude.

A few people were relatively unhappy about some of the comments directed toward the French in general, and I see their points. Being American and retired military, I've made my own comments (off the board) about the French, the Brits, the Aussies and every country in/around Latin America....but all in good fun. I had the good fortune to work with many foreign military people who impressed me beyond belief. Yes, yes, even the French.

There are few truly civilized countries in the world today. We'd be well-advised to remember who our friends and allies truly are. Disagreements? Of course, we have them amongst ourselves as well, but that doesn't change the fact that true freedom and democracy and a free press are unique and laudable.

Count your blessings and eat your cheese!

I really think opinions on the French people should not be based upon their usefulness in a conflict of nearly 200 years ago.

The negative attitude of this one french guy should not lead to a massive generalization.

It's good there was an apology from BP, and hopefully there'll be one from others, who were quite hot-tempered in their reaction..

My thread was simply mentioning the historical contribution of France to the U.S. It was just a history comment triggered by the French comments. Some people don't have the love of History that I do, so I thought I'd just share that for those who might not have known about it. French support was around 200 years ago and may or may not reflect the French today. Our saving the French happened quite a while back (1918 and 1944-45). And we did have help from other countries on both Germany's Eastern and Western fronts. Sadly there are less and less of those American heroes still with us. They were truly a great generation. I wonder what kind of reflection we are of that generation? They were loved by the world. Us not so much.

I made a comment on the locked post about kids in school in France. Someone took offense at it so I need to apologize. It was only meant to be taken in light heartedly kind of tongue in cheek. I have a few friends who our from France and I tell them French jokes all the time out of ribbing on each other. So again, my apologies to those I offended. I also agree you can't blame an entire culture or group of people on one person's negative actions.
