Dani's chorus is good ol' Chili Peppers but ya, heard the connection the first time i heard Dani...... this seems to be gaining steam, wonder how far it'll go?

would be funny to see RHCP start Dani and then Petty come out and have the song go into Mary Jane on an awards show or something :p

I accidentally caught RHCP on SNL a while back and decided to watch because, well, because I was sitting there.

That was the song and the first thing I thought was - WTF? Did they talk to Tom Petty about this?

Not the world's most exciting songwriters, but still.

Yeah, pretty blatant. Pretty strong Hendrix Purple Haze inspired guitar riff at the end too. I don't think he minds too much, though.;)

I tend to agree... their singer is an abomination on the music industry.... some his lyrics are appalling... the music from older tracks is good but anything post one hot minute is boring...

I guess I'll have to be the lone dissenter here. Both songs are based, the main verses anyway, on a similar 3-cord progression but the bridges are not even close. I can remember George Harrison losing a lawsuit over his "MY Sweet Lord" which did sound a lot like the Chiffones "He's So Fine" but those cord progressions were so unique that it was hard to argue it was a coincidence. Based on what I heard, I think the lawsuit is a loser.

I think I read somewhere that both songs had the same producer, hmmm.

This is total crap. The only part that's similar is the verse, and the melody is NOT the same. If it was illegal to mimic the feel of another band/song there would be a ton of bands in deep sh*t. This isn't about the band's musicality or talent. It's simply a cheap shot and a stretch at the very least. Hell, even in this thread people started piling on without ever really knowing what they were talking about.

Im curious. Did you guys that dont think its bad listen to the "dual clip"?

When those are laid on top of each other its almost the same. The lyrics even have similarities in parts.

Sorry, the RHCP screwed the pooch on this one.

No offense, but how do you know that people were "piling on without ever realy knowing what they are talking about" in this thread? Aren't you basically making an assumption--the exact thing you are accusing everyone else of doing? How could you possibly know anyone's motive?

There's a link in the first post with links to both songs and a mashup with both songs mashed together. I just reread the thread and I don't see a singe post that's "piling on" with no info.

When I first heard the new RHCP tune on SNL, I immediately thought of Petty's song. It's pretty distinctive.

As for it being a "cheap shot," the songs sound very similar. If they didn't, this thing wouldn't keep going around and around.

Do I think they copied the song on purpose? Of course not. Someone would have to be a utter simpleton to copy a song that was one of the more distinctive hits of the 90s and attempt to re-release it as a new song.

The rhythm of the vocal lines are similar, but they also certainly sound like other RHCP vocal lines. The melodies aren't similar simply because Anthony only has a one note range.....:D

In a van, down by the river...
Am I missing something here?

Lawsuit? What Lawsuit? Unless I have mis-read, I saw nothing about Tom Petty filing a lawsuit!

The post by the attorney on TVBTC page gives fairly accurate representation of the state of the law on music copyrights, but all the article says is that a MD radio station is running a mash-up...I'm not about to argue the merits of the case (I like TP and RHCP), but, unless Tom (or his publishing co.) decide to make an issue of it,...eh? Whaddya gonna do? Damn kids!:D
