OT: Sad Day For Portland Record Store

Today, August 31, 2007, is the last day of business for Portland's premier record store - Music Millennium on NW 23rd. This place has been in the same location for the past 30 years, and, due to lower record sales and higher rents, is now forced to close their flagship store.

With it's dedication to the local music scene, cool vibe, and intimate stage, this place was a stop for most musicians traveling through Portland. I've seen everyone from Little Feet to Pink Martini, and from Weezer to Taj Mahal. We're gonna miss this place! And it's funny, when friends come to visit, there are two places they always want to see - Powell's Book Store and Music Millennium on 23rd.

Tonight is the last night of shows before closing the doors. I am both honored and saddened that we get one of the last spots, followed by Stars of Track and Field and Floater. Dang, it's gonna be a great night of music!

Unfortunately, I think it's a "sign of the times'!! Wasn't there also a "Towers Record" store up in that area that closed not too long back??

When I was fourteen, fifteen, all I really wanted to do was get a job in a cool record store.

I did, too, for a while. I loved it.

Working for Amazon Dot Com doesn't seem quite as romantic.

yeah but it is the reality....cd's cost too much...have one good song, the kids and adults steal it , the tickets are too expensive the venues are controlled by two companies ticketmaster owns you, its ok the band will make it up in t shirts...no wait now the tshirts are controlled by two companies and suddenly there is no profit......

OH wait you dont worry about the lack of tickets sold the thirts with the industry guys making all of the money the stolen music...you will make it on publishing1 oh wait they dont pay for stolen tracks and you gave your publishing to the thirt guy to get a four color shirt

Sounds like you've been down this road a time....or two.

Last night was an absolute blast. To share the stage with all these great musicians was, well I certainly feel "I'm not worthy." And the band Floater - wow, what a great up and coming band. Stay tuned for these guys!

I still buy 'em too, Phatty. I like cover art (even though it's so tiny on CDs) and liner notes, plus full lyrics and some photos.

That's the only thing I miss about 12" LP albums.. cover art was great in those days and you could actually SEE it!

I too buy CDs Its good to find out what players played on what tracks
You cant find that out from a download!!!

Also I might be wrong but isn't a download not as good quality compared to CD?

True, a download doesn't have the quality of a CD.

I've noticed that some companies are including a .pdf of the album artwork with the download if you buy the whole album.

It's very true .mp3 files don't have near the sound quality of a CD. You've taken a song which requires 9 mb / min to record and compressed it to 2-3 mb for the entire song. You're missing a lot when you listen to an .mp3 file.

As a CD/DVD replicator, I don't believe we've actually seen a slowdown for music. Granted, most of it is crap we ship into places like Sam's Club, Best Buy, etc.... but it's still music and people are buying it. My favorite is the "America the Beautiful" sh*t we make in China and sell through Dollar Tree stores. Ironic, huh?
