Do cab speakers fade? I've heard things like "underpowering a cab will shorten speaker life" and I bought a used Ampeg 115 a few years ago because I was short on cash and needed a sub in a hurry and the guy at the music store said something to the effect of "it's probably got a few good years left in it"...like it was going to wear out eventually.

To my understanding, there is no such thing as underpowering a cab. People tend to confuse this with turning the pre-amp gain too far, making it clip which can cause damage to the speaker.

I have heard though that speaker cones can wear out and need to be replaced once in a while (recone), but I haven't had a cab that long as to have any experience with it.

Speakers will wear out in time but in most cases will blow before you sense somethings going on, The paper gets old and tears etc.
