View from the back of my hotel.

The Mexican Caribbean is much better than I imagined.

(Stay away from Cancun, though.)

Cheers! Good to be home.

Um...need more coffee, I guess.

It was beautiful. Cancun, which we had to go through to catch the ferry to the island, was overflowing with underaged American binge drinkers, so we remained quiet and tried to not move around quickly. Luckily, our wait was brief. Cancun is very Americanized, which is good if you're an American who wants to go to a foreign country that isn't very foreign. Me, I'm in for the local flavor. Screw Burger King.

The hotel was excellent. (Note the view above.)

The front of the hotel also looked pretty good:

On the left is a huge tidal pool, not more than 3 or 4 feet at its deepest, perfect for kids or people who are scared of sea creatures.

The hotel was within walking distance of downtown Isla Mujeres, which is safe and secure for tourists but still retains its integrity.

Erika doing some window shopping, although there really aren't very many windows.

Now imagine how good this photo above would be had I not been drunk.

THAT'S how good the sunset was.

Way off in the distance, you can see Cancun. DO NOT GET ANY CLOSER THAN THIS.

Back of the hotel.

I slathered myself with sunscreen, so I am not suffering. (We really white people do learn this after a few decades....although I saw some lobster-ish Canadians around the hotel.)

The transportation was painless. They know what they're doing there.

Definitely recommended.

Jack,

Cancun is nice if you go when there are no American college kids around. I've been there several times. Unfortunately one time was during "spring break" season, and I was embarrassed to be American after witnessing the treatment of the locals by the frat boys.

Of course, I'm more into running around to the Mayan ruins so Cancun is a great 'base' for that... Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba, El Ray.

And Xcaret is a really beautiful nature park down the coast a bit. Your photos brought back memories.

The local people in the Yucatan are really, really wonderful. How long they'll continue to put up with us, I'm not sure!

Tell me, how was the native cuisine?

It was excellent, and I'm no fan of what passes for Mexican food here in Texas.

But I think they're missing the boat in a small way. If it were me, I'd open a chain of chicken places and call them "Chicken Itza".

We did Cancun in early February (no Spring Breakers)...

Did Chichen Itza and Xcaret - had a wonderful time overall.

But...

I completely agree with the "americanized" assesment of Cancun - I was disapointed - there was a chain-establishment everywhere you looked.

The few trips we took afforded some opportunity to experience some local flavors, but next time we'll want more Mexico from Mexico... :)

Thanks for the pics, Jack! Looks like a great trip.

My wife and I are leaving for Cozumel next month, and only spending a single night in Cancun before heading off to see Chichen Itza the next day. I think we're also planning on seeing Tulum and Xul-Ha (spending the night in Playa del Carmen) before heading to Coz for several days of scuba diving.

I agree that Cancun during Spring Break season is to be avoided; I'm hoping that by the time we fly in at the end of April they will be in the process of cleaning up the wreckage wrought by the tide of American teenagers. In any event, we're only there for one night. ;)
