I honestly never really thought about it until you mentioned it. It depends on what I'm playing, but usually the middle.

When I first learned (self-taught) I just used the thumb. Then a guitar
player friend showed me how to alternate the index and middle finger. I then
moved to just the index finger and slowly started using two fingers. For me
it took a long time to get it where the two fingers could pluck evenly. Tried
a pick too. Then tossed that to use the nail on the index finger while pressing
the thumb against it like I was actually holding a pick. Strange, but it works
for me.
