I'm sitting here listening to Reggae on my MusicMatch radio right now. There isn't another style of music that I know of that is so centered around the bass lines. I think that some of the best bassists I've had the opportunity to hear were in Jamaica playing in the hotels and bars there.

I just wanted to see how you guys felt about this style of music.

I saw Marley in Sydney in 1976. It's still the best live show I've ever seen, regardless of genre. I love good reggae, but bad reggae can be very bad.

You are the singlemost person in the world I am most envious of, Mr Mark.

I'd give my nutsack to see BMW.

I really would.

I like the Reggae music mon, but have to admit I don't OWN any (unless you can include the Bad Brains). You mention "good" reggae being "good" but "bad" reggae being "VERY bad". Could anyone recommend some "good" reggae I might be able to check out? Something with PHAT bass lines that I can really 'bug out' to.
Cheers!

Try some

Bob Marley (obviously)
Burning Spear
Big Youth
U-Roy

There are hundres of others & those listed above are quite old school, but it's a good start.

There is also an Album doing the rounds called Dub Side of The Moon, by the Easy Star All Stars. I think you can guess what it is, and it's very well done too.

Element, you're entitled to your opinion, mate.

Just don't forget, Reggae was INVENTED for bass! ;)

As JB1 said, Bob Marley has great bass lines. Just get the "Legends" CD and learn everything on it. I really like a lot of the lines on Third World's CD "Serious Business" too, but there's tons of good reggae out there. Don't forget to check out Peter Tosh too. Like I said, I listen to it a lot on Music Match radio on my computer.

Don't do much of it but when I do I like to try and create my own lines for it. Fun is what it is. Just not a mainstay in my interest.

Love it!

Legalize It and Babylon By Bus are 2 of my fave discs...

Does "Pass the Duchie" by Musical Youth qualify?

We have been known to dabble in a little "easy listening" Reggae, a little bit or Mr Marley.

Not a big fan though.

Rod, you are no longer a Mod. Reggae is my absolute favorite. Download the song "Darkness" by Black Uhuru. Currently my favorite bass line.

Love it. I have a few discs in my collection including a truly aweful set of reggae Beatles covers. Having been brought up on Chuck Berry my favourite is Peter Tosh's version of Johnny B Goode.

Some other artists that are worth checking out are:

Dennis Brown (Words of Wisdom, Satisfaction Feeling, Brown Sugar are my faves by him),

Gregory Issacs (Red Rose for Gregory, IOU, Best of Vol 1 and 2)

Buju Banton (Til Shilo, Inna Heights)

Sizzla (Praise Ye Jah, Black Woman and Child)

Pretty much anything that Rounder records has rereleased from Studio One (Heptones, Freddir McGregor, Slim Smith)

Just be aware that reggae is a very broad label these days that contains various different forms, the same way that the rock label encompasses everything from the Beatles to Blink 182 to REO Speedwagon (eek!), for better or for worse.
