Which 'modern' EBMM grabbed you and said 'buy me' and why?

For me, the Big Al. The first time I saw it, I just thought, 'what the hell is that?!'....in a good way. I loved the shape, the idea of 3 single coils, and the big EQ, and what really excited me, active/passive.

Im guessing most of you will say Bongo, which is another damn good answer. BUT, for me, the Big Al bodyshape and sheer coolness made me buy two!

The Big Al made me Bongo free. And I've loved all 3 Bongos I've owned. I thought the Bongo was the most ergonomic bass on the market, but amazingly the Big Al tops it.

My winner is reflex, of course! :)

Sure it's actually 25th, but if we're talkin' about serial production models, it's definitely reflex!

Better than that is probably only reflex with built in Gamechanger, but we must wait for the official presentation! ;)

Well, I was set to get a Bongo, and I will one day. But, I have so much incoming I thought id be patient and get those first, and then by that time, the Gamechanger will be here.

One day Id like a Reflex shaped Gamechanger...

I think, and this is just me, that the Big Al is like a 'modern' take on a 'vintage' tone, whereas the Bongo is a more modern tone.

Normally im quite boring with shapes, but wow did the Big Al grab me!

Which modern MM grabbed me and said to buy me? Easy choice, has to be my Classic SR4 one-off I found at the Philly Guitar Convention on Sunday. The bass is a dream to play, and just belts out thumping lows with that perfect vintage growl. Each work day has consisted of me staring at pictures and waiting to get home and jam with it.

Well, the OP said "grabbed" (past tense) which means it's limited to basses we actually own.

So, yeah, Bongo. It completely changed my mind about what a bass should be. I was headed firmly in the direction of boo-teek basses and was seriously considering one from a well-known builder located in Kingston NY when the Bongo whacked me upside the head.

Since I've got my Bongo needs well covered, if I were to buy a bass tomorrow it'd be a Big Al 5.

The Gamechanger has me really interested, but the Reflex body doesn't really do it for me. A BA5 with it would be very compelling.

For the moment I'm out of the market, though… looking to buy a new house so all spending is going that way.

Right now mine is the Bongo but I have not had the opportunity to play a Big Al or a Reflex yet or a Music Man with the Game Changer in it.

I LOOOOVE my Stingrays...both 4 and 5 strings....BUT my 25th is THE go to bass for me. I played every flavor of EBMM there is and also dug the Big Al in a major way. I could see myself with a Gamechanger in a Reflex 4 and a Reflex 5 and simply not need another bass again!! I think the HH Reflex is the most flexible bass I have ever had in my hands bar none... I use mine in active and passive and wind up using quite a few different settings over the course of a 4 hour show! I get more compliments on my tone than I ever have with any other bass I have owned! Try one if you haven't...I expect the Reflex with the Gamechanger will be able to replace a LOT of other basses out there...

Peace,

T

For me it was definitely the Big Al. I was a lifetime F*#@$r player. Own a few of them and had been playing them for 18 years. Saw the Big Al online, was intrigued by what a cool looking bass it was and what unique sound possibilities it offered with the SSS and the passive/active and pickup selection. When I finally saw one at the store, I picked it up, plugged it in, played it for an hour and then went home. 15 minutes later I drove back to the store and bought it because I was obsessed with how amazing this was.

The Big Al being my first EBMM bass, it only wet my whistle for the EBMM, I still had a thirst for more. Within a 2 month period, I was fully converted and went after a Classic SR4 for the vintage tones and beautiful birdseye neck, not to mention the nice finish on that as well. So, the Big Al got me into the Ball Family, and the Classic has kept me here. I haven't touched my other basses once since the day I brought home the Big Al. Can't see them getting much time in the future either as these 2 beauties are too nice and effortless to play.
