It was exactly what I thought ... before buying my SUB. Most of the painted necks feel sticky, but the paint used on the SUB is different. I can't explain why. The feel of the "raw" neck of my Morse is incredible but in the case of the SUB, a natural neck would be inappropriate.

I almost bought a SUB when I was guitar shopping a couple of years ago because it was more in my price range than the Axis I wanted. That painted neck was the dealbreaker. All works out in the end, though. If I had bought the SUB, I might have been happy with it, then I wouldn't have been griping about not having a good guitar for the past two years, then I wouldn't have got my Axis for Christmas. :D

You guys are welcome to the natural headstocks, more matching ones left for me. :p

Yup - they look damn fine on your LE, John! I love your LE! :D

Thanks! Those 2007 LEs did turn out quite nicely as all of us who have them can attest;).

I'm looking forward to seeing a couple of 2008 LE models with pickguards - particularly a Silo or Silo Special with a rosewood board.

I like both, with any combination of rosewood or maple boards. Rosewood + natty looks classic, rosewood + matching looks sleek, maple + natty looks clean and organic, maple + natty has that cool eighties thing going on (especially witha solid black body, black pickguard and black headstock.) You can't go wrong!

I've liked natural headstocks from the start. It's been a deal breaker for me on more than a couple of guitars. Call me weird, I can't explain it. If I had a choice on the Luke it would have been a natural too... And it's gotta be a rosewood fretboard too...

See, for me, both of those would be even sweeter with a matching headstock, especially the black one.

For me I think all musicmans look better with painted headstock... natty might work for me on Als with certain colors, maybe that has something to do with its similarity to a strat?

I can't imagine owning a strat with a painted headstock though.... come to think of it, I can't imagine owning anymore strats.. :p

The best part of this entire post is that this is a legitimate discussion where no one is wrong !!!

Speak for yourself. Anyone that favors a natural headstock is not only wrong but they are dangerous, especially to children and the elderly.

If I found a great guitar that has either a natural headstock or a matching one, the thing that would win me over is sound and feel. I couldn't care less which kind of headstock it has.

I just wanted to ask because other than the standard,"congrats on new guitar" comments we commonly see when someone posts about a new guitar, the most common comments that I see are comments re: the headstock color.
Good thread. Interesting to read everyone's opinion.
Thanks,

I like em both. I have a hardtail Axis in translucent red with a finished head and maple fingerboard. That deep red with the white tuning key buttons IMHO is a thing of absolute beauty!!!!

If lovin' this is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

It's a personal choice, and there really is no wrong answer. I love natural headstocks, but mostly because it draws your eye to the maple top. There are probably a few color combos that would even make me want a natty headstock, even with a rosewood neck.
