I decided a while ago to dispose of pretty much all my basses apart from my Bongo 4, which included a Modulus Sonic Hammer (forerunner of the Flea Bass).

I hadn't managed to sell it, but today I did get this in exchange for it :)

A lined fretless SR4 - late '95 by the serial number, now strung with my preferred "girly" 30-90 strings and sounding great.

..."girly" 30-90 strings...

Hey... they may be girly strings, but not many of us have the finesse to use them. I love super light gauge strings (30-90 or 35-95 when I have to tune down a half step). They get a certain sound that I love from a Stingray that just doen't happen with the typical telephone cables.

And... that's a killer bass! It could be a twin to my fretted 'Ray.

as usual, I'm trying out new scratchplates/pickguards on it

I like the original black, possibly more than that abalone, but I'm wondering what else to try (I'm not a big tort fan, which will no doubt disappoint a lot of you ;) )

Maybe black pearloid ?

Nice Ray. The black pickguard looks fantastic, even better than tortoise, I think.

About strings, I had my Sterling strung with GHS Boomers 30-90 and recently switched to Slinkys .100. Man! What a difference!

I have been a fan of light strings for a while, but these .100 make my Sterling sound so much better.

On fretless, I already use .95, since you can really benefit from the low tension to maximize mwah.

I'd go with good old black on that one. It's a nice bass you've got there! You still got your translucent blue, Paul?

Yes, still got the blue one too :)

I've for once agreed with the masses and gone back to black - after looking through the gallery of MMs I couldn't find anything I liked more than the black.
