Hi All!
Last year at this time I had NO Stingrays. Now I have 5 (and a 20th Anniversary SR5 on order). My question concerns the different output levels of the different models and pickup configurations that I have. This difference in output is very noticeable through the headphone practice amp that I use, because I don't change the volume setting at all as I play my various basses through it. (And yes, all basses have had brand new Duracell batteries installed.)
Loudest output is from my 30th Anniversary Stingray 4. Really punchy and present, followed closely by my natural SR4H (2006). Next in volume is the 1996 SR4 I got in trade for a 1983 F****r Precision. My two SR5's, one H and one HH, seem quite a bit quieter than any of the SR4's. Not bad, mind you, just quieter.
Is this loudness difference a function of the difference between Alnico and Ceramic magnets in the pickups, or of the pre-amp design? The SR5's have a different pre-amp than the SR4's, don't they? And does the 30th Anniversary have a different pre-amp design than other SR4's, or is the greater output a function of the string-thru-body design and the mahogany body? Your comments and observations greatly appreciated!
