Email Bob at Eurotubes tell him what tone you want and he will help you out. I think youd like new tubes instead of adding a pedal.

+1 for the Plexitube

I'm a big fan of Lucious and the Plexitube definitely gets you in that area tonewise.

I had one and it was totally amazing to hear so many good tones out of that little box.
Well worth the price, no doubt about it!

I have the Plexitube,....basically the Hot British X's 2......nice pedal, clean, quiret, smooth,...just not my tone ( British ).......want to try the classic.......What about the Ibanez tube screamer,.......SRV used one,...is that the tone you are looking for?

Overdrive and distortion tones are something I've been struggling with for a long time. I use stomp boxes - purely clean amp.

Based on what I've been reading here I lashed out and ordered a Xotic BB Preamp and a Fulltone OCD.

All I can say so far is wow. Just in limited mucking around at loungeroom volume I have a feeling I've finally found what i've been looking for.

I was using MI Audio Blues Pro, Tubezone and Crunchbox - but with the recent change to EMG pickups in my Silouette Special and the purchase of a LUKE which is now my main guitar, the tone from the MI Audio's isn't quite right.

I'm yet to try the LUKE , as it's at the luthier's getting a set of piezo saddles fitted.. but the Sil sounds pretty good so far.

PS. can't wait to get the LUKE back with piezo's!!! I'm having them wired to the same volume pot and the on/off switch will be in the form of a new tone pot being push-pull.. i didn't want to drill holes for extra switch/vol pot.. and i'll only ever use the piezo on its own anyway. WOOOHOOO

I had them custom calibrate a set of tubes for my DSL 50 and it was like night and day. I had Bob bring down the gain a little to help increase the overall clarity and in doing so improved the clean channel as well!

As far as a pedal, I'm going in a different direction than everyone else and recommending a Keeley modded Boss DS-1 pedal. This pedal pairs up with Marshall amps so well. I had one of his DS-1's (with the Seeing Eye Mod, now replaced by the Ultra mod), and I used it as a clean boost to push the preamp and it really made the amp sound huge.

One more thing to consider is what speakers/cab you are using with your amp. I'm not familiar with that model, but a new speaker/cab combo can really smooth out the harshness of the amp as well.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I'm really not happy with this amp- I just dont find the sound fat enough- even with low amounts of pre amp gain. I've now cut my rig down to a few pedals all into the front of the amp on the clean channel- which is actually quite nice for a Marshall! :)

I'm going to either look for a good hi gain pedal, and or get a Peavey classic 30 or similar. I'm just getting so much enjoyment out of my Barber Direct Drive I don't think I'll ever want to go back to the drive channel on my amp.

Watch this space anyway...
