ok, i finally got drunk enough to adjust the trussrod on my 79 natural ray (not really drunk, just courageous!), and i finally got it exactly where i want it, with my dr's and everything and it's awesome, could stand for a fret level in a few spots, but nothing major.. but while i was doing it:
crack! creak! groan! rattle!

that was scary, i was waiting for the truss rod to come out the back of the neck, but no! I remain triumphant.

so my question/comment, with the truss at a certain range, not all the way loose, not super tight, just in a certain range, playing the open g and a few select notes or harmonic combinations, i would get a rattling INSIDE the neck right around the 4th-7th fret.

so...is my trussrod messed up (i'm assuming not cause it's solid), i wonder if it's just kind of...y'know.. floating around in there, maybe?

my 03 ray doesn't do it, so i'm wondering if others have had similar noises resounding from within your "vintage" necks...

thanks!

If you try to adjust the rod, does it feel the same way as before the scary stuff?
From your decription it sounds like you broke the rod, or you could have just stripped the bullet. But if turning the bullet feels just fine you have a strange problem.
The rod lies in a curved channel, where the "start" and "end" of the rod are closest to the fretboard. So unless the rod is completely loose it should not rattle.

fella's

I've long since sold that bass, the original post was multiple years old.

I traded that stingray for a refin 63 jazz and a swr big ben (brand new)

yup...

the truss was not broken, worked fine and still does, it just rattles sometimes..

thanks
