Hey there,

my pickup search for my silo goes on...
I still have the pups of a Sub1 in this guitar with the stock middle single coil.

To my ears the humbuckers are a little to hot and I want more something like a hotter PAF for the bridge and something with plenty of harmonics and a huge amount of sustain in the neck.

Since I totally fell in love with Gilmour's type of lead sounds I was wondering about a single coil in the neck, because they have a lot more crisp especially in their slightly gained or crunch sounds.

Because of the HSH pickguard in my silo, I will have to get a single coil in a HB format. Here came the p90 in my mind.

What do you guys think about that? Do those p90s also work well in alder bodys?

Thanks!
-Jerry

If I were you, I would just order a custom pickguard and put a single coil in the neck slot. I think a P90 would look really strange with a regular humbucker and single in the middle. I saw a Silo with a layout like that before, and it looked pretty bad.

Oh, and I dont think the P90 would fit into the existing neck slot on the pickguard anyway.

Also remember that if this is a 24 fret silo, the location of the neck pickup is not the same as it is in a 22 fret guitar. If you're looking for a 22 fret neck pickup sound, you need to change guitars.

I do like the idea of an mm90 in the neck position, however. I'm almost done with my latest sub 1 creation and I refuse to make any more changes!!!! (wish I heard this idea 4 months ago, though)

if you want a real single coil in the neck I think you can get a pickguard with HSS format from chandler for instance

I agree with threeminutesboy, HSS with a new Pick Guard sounds the way forward fella.

If you are intent on a total pickup change, you could Luke/Gilmour-ify your Silo: EMG 85/SA/SA...........?

.... I'm almost done with my latest sub 1 creation and I refuse to make any more changes!!!! ...

We need proof of this alchemy of which you speak!

My new Silhouette has an MM90 at the neck and in the bridge position, with a standard-style single-coil in the centre. In my opinion this is a killer combination that delivers a wide range of meaty and Stratty sounds, especially as a push/pull switch on the tone control adds the neck pickup to any selection, providing the extra permutations of front and back together or all three. The same pickup configuration can easily be achieved on a stock Silhouette by simply replacing the humbuckers with same-size P90 pickups - a design hybrid that's readily available these days.

I personally like your idea of introducing the MM90. I guess the trick is to always have the option available to go back to the original setup. Custom pickguard sounds the best way

yes it would have to be a 'custom' pickguard as the HSS and HSH pickguards to not match each others' shape.

Sorry, threeminutesboy, as yet I don't have any pics of my new Silhouette, which isn't modded by the way, it was built that way.

MM90 pups are available ONLY with ASS MM90 and AL MM90 means you can not get them separately

from a size point of view MM90 will not fit into the HB cavity then you will have to route it

Phat cats are great I have used them and they are really great pickups that will replace any humbucker (same size)

Hi Jerry,
have you thougt about the P-Rails from SD? I haven't tried them yet, but the description of the SHPR-1 is promising.
It's tempting to have three pickups in one and it fits in the space of a humbuker.

Cheers,
Mikey
