Yo Dean,

I have an Axis Sport with MM90s and wanted to upgrade to a DiMarzio P90-sized humbucker, too. What I went with was a DLX-PLUS, as I sort of wanted to retain some of that open P90 sound, but add some more "beef" to it.
The housings of the DLX (and DLX_PLUS), the ToneZone and the Superdistortion from DiMarzio as P90 replacements are basically the same.
I encountered a problem in that way, that

a) the pickup fit the cavity in length and width,

but

b) the cavity just was not deep enuff to avoid the strings sitting on the PU

I guess you would have to do a little routing in the depth to retrofit those DiMarzios (P.S.: ToneZone is NOT Seymour Duncan ;)).

I still have my spare PU (the DiMarzio DLX-PLUS) lying around as at least me, I didn't want to drill and route inside the PU cavity...

...BUT:

What lately caught my attention was a boutique PU maker called Harry Häussel, who produces high end PUs and has sorta just invented a way to retrofit "real" fullsize humbuckers in P90 cavities:

Example:

...this page is in German from a German reseller & tech that's really into this stuff...

acys-lounge.de - Mounting HB P90 hole

Häussel PUs can be found here: w w w . h a e u s s e l . c o m

...go to GUITAR and proceed to HUMBUCKERS, scroll down a little and you'll find every humbucker can be provided in that custom P90 fitting frame...

I'm currently sort of saving for a pair of those as I had the chance to try them in a Les Paul and Häussels are simply outstanding.

Cheers

Hey Dean,

yeah, got that.
The basics on the Häussel site are also in English (klick the Union-Jack).
For further info, you could contact Acy (acys-lounge.de - Home). He's a distributor and speaks English, too if I remember right.
...don't know many people in Germany nowadays who don't actually :D

The pics however shold give an idea of how it works.

Cheers

I believe that DiMarzio makes several of its humbuckers in P90 sized/look format for just this purpose. The Tone Zone is one of those.

Go to Shed Pickups.
He makes pickups / pickup covers from scratch. Even makes a single coil fit a humbucker case. His P90 pickup covers are amazing. Will make Pickups / Covers stock or reliced to look 50 years old!!
These pickups are amazing and have received accolades in Guitar n Bass magazine.

He will make them to any specification and (for UK prices) he's not unreasonable.

His name is Spence I know him well - tell him Spud sent ya.

Hi there!
Had a look in my webstats this morning, and found that thread here! Funny to see my site is so international! ;)

And "yes", I do speak a some english! ;)

And good to see that bavarian outback and australian outback (ok, Melbourne ain´t outback!) are so close together here!

Don´t matters, what pickups you will choose, but I would not do any wood working on that nice guitar!

so nice day, cya: "ACY"

Hi Acy,

welcome to this fine place !

I recently contacted you with questions about those fine Häussel "P90-conversion" humbuckers.
Didn't get back to you yet, as the two "Balls" that feature the MM90ies currently sort of "are not at home" but doing studio work at a friend of mine
We'll talk these thingies when they are back in town later on. :)

Cheers from Munich
