IMO, it's got several mods that would make me turn away quickly. Bart, brass nut, hipshot.

But to each his own. Mebbe the guy likes the bart sound better, coupled with his everlasting desire to try a brass nut on a bass.

Ah, I remember listening to the newest Hendrix release, wearing tie-dye, ranting about Nixon and installing brass nuts.

Seriously, check your watch. It's 2006.

Is the thread about appropriate pricing, or whether personal options/preferences are respectable [or not]?

When I got my [used] Ray, I didn't know whether FL was extra cost or not. It's clear gloss over nice ash which I think is extra $$, yes?? But I would not have known that at the time. It has a BassLines PU and EQ system. I know some builders use 3rd party PUs and EQ [like Spector, MTD, Steinberger] so the name on the PU cover is meaningless to me. I just judge that stuff by ear.

Was $800 too much in perfect condition? Maybe on ebay, but not in a good shop where I can plug in and avoid the pig-in-poke situation. Could I have got it for $700 if I acted like a knowledgeable EBMM forumite with forumite attitudes? Maybe. Or maybe they'd just say "Golem, if that one is not the bass for you, leave it for someone else who really wants one like that." Remember, if something costs extra, and you like it better, it *IS* an upgrade over the original as-shipped version of that ax. Maybe those who agree are in the minority, so the market for the upgraded ax is a niche market. That's OK, since the modded examples are in short supply compared to stock versions.

Back to my Ray. For $800, face-to-face retail, I loved it. Never asked "Where's the old PU?". Maybe the 1st owner ebayed it, or trashed it, or traded it in with the ax and the store ebayed it .... or who cares. I bought what was hanging on the wall and have kept it in my playing rotation for several years, and it's still a top shelf choice. I didn't care if it was an EBMM or Leo MM or a Seymour Duncan Limited Edition MM. I have however in the past few years determined that it's a Golem Binjammin signature model, very very rare ....... and precious.
