Hey guys,

I just wanted to know your opinion on these. I'm very close to ordering a JP7 (color still unknown!). I have heard the pickups can be very single coil and kind of quacky sounding. What do you guys think?

I'm not sure where you got your info, but it is incorrect. (please see my signature --> i know of which i speak)

I actually heard about it from a petrucci interview, which I cannot locate. They still have humbucking characteristics, but are supposed to have some sort of single coil sound or something...this is why i was checking, I wasn't sure I believed it.

On the standard JP's, with the toggle in the middle position, the coils of the hbuckers are split so they function as single coils and somewhat approximate a strat's 4th position but they don't quack per se. The BFR's have a push/pull pot that activates all 4 coils with the toggle in the middle position, in addition to the standard split coils configuration.

He's speaking of when you put the switch in the middle position.

Well, the Air Norton is designed to have single coil clarity of attack as well... based on the Humbucker From Hell that he used on IAW. The Music Man version does have more gain that the Ibanez version did, so it's a little less single coily, but it still has that sort of characteristic. But not a quacky thing... it's just a nice mix of single coil attack and boing (lol) with humbucker fullness and warmth.

Listen to Dream Theater albums... no thin quackiness going on. LOL A lot of chunck and sustain though.

Seriously, 300 people have already died from switching into World Domination mode on my guitar at Berklee.

Tuition is going up. Thanks a lot, EBMM.

center position = grind. dig that sound thru high gain amps.

Also actually makes for a great Tele sound when mixed with the piezo. Heard a guy playing a bunch of country licks on a Pet and sounded amazing! Clear and... no hum. :)
