I wouldn't go as far as calling it a strat sound. But it the middle position features one coil from each pickup, hooked up in parallel. So you get a very nice, clean sound. A little too tame for my taste, however. I like the in between tones in my Axis way better. But that's mostly due to the pickups; I much prefer the pickups in the Axis, personally.

I was not sure how to describe it until I put on one of my Robert Cray Albums a few days ago.

That JP6 middle position sounds a lot like Robert Cray! Clean and quacky in a different out-of-phase kind of way.

I love the Petrucci pickups!

Honestly, if there is a reason for me to change out the pups in my JP6, then it's because of that middle position. Don't get me wrong, I absolutley love my Pet through and through. It's just that sound that comes out of it in the middle position is completely Petrucci, in my opinion. It's such a signature sound for him and I'd like to be able to pick something that's a little more unique to me, though for now I'm going to leave them in there until I decide exactly what to do with those Pet pups. I'm thinking of getting in touch with Jagman, for anyone familiar.

All in all, the middle position is not a bad sound at all, just a signature one.

I use the middle pickup position on my Petrucci about 90% of the time. I don't sound anything like Petrucci with or without the middle position. ;)

i completely agree
listen to the opening of stream of consciousness
it is petruccis signature clean sound
and thats exactly what the middle position sounds like
you can however play around with it (eq and so forth)
but it always has that character
but i love that character
and when you team it with the piezo you are sitting in a wave of what i would call 'perfect sound' (it just sounds so great)

mix it with some distortion and you get can get some thwack out of it
yngwie stlye sound (as would be the case with any single coil overdriven really)
but i find on the jp if you hit the overdrive in the middle position you once again still get a signature jp sound
strange deja vu at 2:39
it just sound so much like that

so i agree that it sounds just like jp
but nontheless it is an amazing sound
(i find it also has noticably less volume than the other positions but that is also due to the frequency of it)

all of the above is my opinion

interesting. I was kind of guessing that it was a coil tap situation because of it's different sound. I'm currently posturing myself to build my rack system to support the PET as my #1. One of the reasons I bought is because of the great variety of JPs tones along with the fast action.

There's a reason why it sounds "Petrucci"....it is made for him. Just like the Morse, Luke, Al, etc....they are made to the artist's specs. That is the one thing you will have to consider when buying a signature guitar as we all know.

The middle position clean/distorted is a very nice sound. I use the neck pup quite a bit, but that is me.

I use the middle position for my cleans. I setup the JSX clean for that position (volume/tone), and add a touch of chorus & delay. Add a dab of piezo in the middle position (mix) and look out! Chicks love it!

Or, with a mild overdrive, its a very "vintage" type tone.

I love the middle position mixed with the Piezo through the clean channel of my Mesa - It sparkles and shimmers in a really cool way. (I don't use any effects except the amp's natural tube overdrive in the high gain channel) I love that sound for finger picking / jazz-esque sort of stuff.
