Half of that from Wikipedia is wrong. There was Dual Recto in the studio for Systematic Chaos, but numerous interviews where JP has said that almost all of the album was done with the Mark IV. The Repentance solo was the Lonestar lead channel.

As far as what he used for every album, I doubt you'll get a straight answer. There are numerous conflicting interviews out there that say one album is this amp, and the same album was a different amp. Search the JP forum. I know for a fact that there's a thread over there where someone did a timeline of what amps were used when. I also have pics of most of his rigs saved, just because I like checking out that type of stuff.

There is so much gear running in his rig too. Thinking about just the amp is like asking what the nut was made of on a famous guitar and going out and getting a nut made of that material to get that tone. I think the LTE stuff was a smaller rig though and he had great gain tones on those records.

Yeah, the LTE stuff was definitely a smaller rig. In the liner notes for either LTE 1 or LTE 2, there is a pic of JP's rack, which had a Mesa TriAxis, Mesa Formula Preamp, and a Mesa 2:90 in it.

I know that one of the albums was that rig and the other was a Mark IV.

Not exactly sure what you're looking for hendog as for a "why" you want this info, but if it's a tone issue, as in you are looking for his tone, you'd be pretty solid with a Mark IV and a Mark IIC+. Or a Mark V could get pretty close too.

What is it with you guys.

I'm just wondering if someone knew of a timeline of amps somewhere.

One example makes half of it wrong?

What we are doing is trying to help you. At least I posted something. If you want some more credibility what don't you ask Mr. Petrucci himself? He has a forum where you can ask him questions directly...

That part of his forum has been closed for 7 years or so.

Oh I didn't mean to say it was a silly question or anything. Sorry for any misunderstanding. I was just saying that the amp is seeing so much extra processing down the line that it sort of drowns out the individual character of the amp. To me his tone is just great Mesa tone more than a IIC+ or a Rectifier or something specific like that.

I'm just a fan trying to figure out what amp he is using when I listen to a particular album.

Its pretty easy to at least pick out what type of Boogie he's using. For example, The Root of All Evil has that mushy, kinda saggy sound, so that would definitely be the Recto (Roadking in that case). Constant Motion as another example has that really tight palm muting stuff and liquid leads, so that would be a Mark Series.

Yeah hen, I didn't mean to make it seem like your question wasn't worth answering, I just was trying to help, but I'm assuming my statement of "not sure why you need to know" may have been misconstrued. Just trying to help my man, sorry about the confusion. Good luck!

I have a quick and dirty answer for you guys:

Mesa/Boogie. :D

Hendog, I don't know of any place where you'll find a definitive timeline. The wiki articles you'll find are likely based on assumptions and half-truths.

His live rigs have consistently included Mark IV, Mark IIC+, Lone Star, and Road King amps. Now he is using what I refer to as the "Mark V Trifecta"
