i also dislike the small dots, and agree, the shields whil also not my initials either, were very classy.

amazing inlays, really.

I ordered both of mine with just the dots. Originally I was going to get the inlays just for the satisfaction of knowing that there wasn't a single option mine didn't have, but ultimately I chose not to.

It seems busy to me with the inlays, but what do I know? ;)

Dots x 2 here.

Admittedly I didn't really have a choice with the first JP as it was second hand, but I do prefer the dots.

The big JP shield is just a bit....too much?

Yeah, if I were to order a JP, it'd have to have the dots. I hate that shield thing. It's the only thing about the guitar I think is just cheesy. Granted, it's a signature model, so what JP want's he gets I suppose.

On some colors I think the JP inlays look great, like the Mystic Dream and a few others. I tend to like different inlays because I'm just a different type of guy. One of my 7 strings has Greek alpha-characters, my JP6 and JP7 have the shields & piezo, and my acoustic has a "tree of life" inlay. A few times while playing the JPs out and about, people have asked me what the JP initials on the first fret stand for. I simply tell them "Those are my initials, but backwards - Peter James"

Seriously though, it's all personal preference. If I ordered a JP6 or 7 it would probably have the dots & possibly no piezo, unless the hybrid comes out in the summer of '07 in which case I would have no choice but to load that one up with all the bells and whistles. The idea of that guitar even possibly going into production gets me positively giddy with excitement.

Hello,

Just my $0.02 worth: When I ordered my Pet, I was just gonna get dots. But I ordered a Limited Edition model (Rad Red), and it came w/the inlays. Y'know what? I was pleasantly surprised and actually kinda glad it worked out that way.

I don't like the little shield inlays, especially not the one at the first fret with someone else's initials in it. All things considered, i'd rather have a completely blank fretboard.

I have the Shields because I was very specific about the color I wanted and could only find one in the country (at the time), but if I had ordered it, it would have had the dots.

My wife thinks the shields are hearts :D

I agree that it'd be nice to have some elaborate inlays available too, but honestly I'm a little more conservative than Vai - I think they're cool, but I wouldn't actually buy a guitar that overstated.

I'm content with the 50,000 + possible choices available.

When I finally got one with the shields, I realized that the only one that's really special is the JP on the 1st fret. The others kind of fall flat for me. I'm going to sell my two PRBs and replace them with one new one exactly the way I should have ordered it in the first place: Desert gold, Piezo, dots, natural headstock.

So, would you refuse to play a F@nder because it's got someone else's name on it? ;)

(Or a Les Paul, or a PRS, or a Suhr.. etc. etc. etc)

Dots!

I'd only go for the inlays if you could delete the first fret inlay....bleughh! (IMO!)

Well, i do play a John Petrucci model, but not because it's his guitar. In fact, i've probably only ever listened to a few minutes of Dream Theater's or JP's music. I bought the guitar because it was the perfect guitar for me and one of the best guitars i've ever played, not because i'm a fan.

If the one i bought had the inlays, i probably still would have bought it. But if i were ordering custom from the factory, i wouldn't opt for the inlays. I prefer as little on the fretboard face as possible, and a small signature on the headstock isn't a big deal. I also own a Dean and a Danelectro, and would gladly play a Fender or a Les Paul. And hey, my JP has two people's names on the headstock! ;)

But would you order a guitar with "LES PAUL" inlaid on the fretboard if you also had the option to go with something a little more understated?

Haha.. so what's two more initials on the fretboard? :D

I don't think of it so much as JP's initials as his whole logo thing (initials within the shield), so it's more of a 'mark' to me. I'm no fanboy, I hadn't listened to much Petrucci until after I found his MusicMan guitar. I liked the deep contour cut for the picking arm.. that's what drew me in. The rest was gravy.

And if the "LES PAUL" inlay was done in an ornate fashion and looked good to my eye, what the heck. ;)

The polarization of this thread is just affirmation for MusicMan's choice to offer it both ways! :)

Dots. Especially since they're those EBMM, extra-small dots. I love them.

inlays.

HOWEVER, I wish it could come blank. Or just an octave inlay.

no inlays should be an option. I'de even PAY an upcharge to get it.
