I'm actually about to do the same thing. What are you looking at for a power amp? I've been told to go solid state by the guys who are using them, as tube power amps color the sound in a way you don't want when using amp modeling.

Not sure yet. I was thinking about getting one of the QSC GX5's since they're shallow in comparison to other amps.

I might also try out one of the new Engl tube poweramps and turn the amp modeling off...

I use my Egnater Rebel 20 and with a various delays and several different overdrives like the Blackstar High Dual and or a AMT Electronics California Sound and an MXR Custom Shop Overdrive. With my Silo (loaded with the Andy Timmons bridge pickup and an Air Norton.) I can get pretty damn close to a mix between Andy Timmons tone on Resolution and the first Van Halen Album and John Petrucci's tone on Suspended Animation and when I crank up the gain I get up to Michael Angelo Batios No Boundries tone. I kind of hear elements of all of those tones in mine. Mind you I spend hours upon hours tweaking and tweaking my tone. Im a tone FREAK. Even my action and string guage and picks come into account with my tone.

So do you use these overdrives at the same time for Petrucci or do you run just one of them?

I think the problem I'm having is testing this different equipment out TOGETHER. I can go check out a certain pedal or certain amp, but I am curious how the whole thing is going to sound.

A MKIV combo set at class A / tweed, EQ on but, all sliders down to the bottom , lead channel, set volume to taste, and you may have the greatest bedroom amp ever (not tried this with MKV).

Satuation galore or whatever you want.

Really.

Never at the same time. It would be TOO much gain. That was my issue as well so I just bought what I was interested in and tested it out at home. If I liked it I kept it if not I returned it or sold it.
