I have a little question.

Petrucci is currently using 9's (9 to 42) as string gauge for standard tuning, right ? (correct me if I'm wrong)

So, does that mean that the BFR's are shipped with 9's too ? Or are they still stringed, like the older JP6's, with 10's ?

Thanks !

Thank you :)

Was I correct in saying that The Man himself is using 9's ? I thought I read it somewhere a while ago, but I'm not sure where I read it...

in my opinion you're right. I think I've heard he's using 9's for standard tuning. And he increases the gauge +1 for every step/half step down (here I'm not quite sure). I think I've heard that in some video over the YouTube.com but can't find it now.

Yes, this has been discussed many times. Rumor is he works 9s in standard tuning, at least for the live shows.

As many times as this question comes up, Paul's post should be made a sticky. At least until John changes things up again... ;)

Thanks for the definitive info Paul.

Guys ---as a former guitar tech and touring player myself---just remember Pros play all the time. While some players will never change gauges--other guys change all the time depending on how their hands and fingers feel. Believe me --if you have never played a show 320+ days a year--it makes a difference. Sometimes folks will dial back a gauge to give their fingers a break. If you have a tech this isnt a problem!!!! I worked for a guy who used real heavy gauge strings like SRV and after a week or two on the road we had to use the SRV super glue trick to put the tips of his fingers back together for shows!!! I guess my point is dont get too hung up on what gauge a particular player is using---play what feels comfortable for you--thats what the pros do and what that gauge is may change depending on what they are doing and how their hands are feeling.
