when did the piguard cahnge from the odd shaped one (the one the included the knobs) to the round one, and is it the sterling that has the body thats tapered or did a year of stingray have the body tapered?
just like to improve my knowledge of the greatest basses ever. :)

i mean ive been looking at peopel pictures of their sr4 and sterlings, and i noticed some of them have a different shaped pick gurad, i was wondering if that related to a year or... something else

Our pickguards have retained the same shape from day one.(unlike some of us  )

Only the 5 string Stingray has the pickguard that has knobs on it. The Sterling and stingray 4 have always had the oval pickguard.

You haven't been looking at 4 strings with odd pickguards. You just haven't been paying attention to the pictures of 5 strings that you have been looking at.

ok that makes since, i never did count the strings, is there a reason the five strings have the running pckgurad, or does jon still have no clue what im talking about, i didnt mean to conffuse anybody :p

I personally like the SR5 pg - but it's more to cover the SR5 electronics. At least that's what I've been told.

Yeah, the routing for the preamp on the SR5 is on the top of the body. A pic from BassCentral has a clear PG on an SR5 - you can see the guts of the thing:
