Yeah and you probably get tired over being a duck. Those are short legs bro and I can understand getting tired. :)

We took it a different way than you meant it didn't we?

In Vegas with the Bellamy's one time we were opening up for the Oak Ridge Boys, our set was 18 minutes twice a night for 12 days. The shortest gig I ever had, by the time I sort of got into it, the crew was rolling me and my riser off stage. Then of course the partying started and it seemed like we got dressed up for nothing.

Right now I might play a couple of 4 song sets at the local jam, I can't wait to start doing gigs again... maybe after the first of the year...

I've been playing 4 hour gigs for 28 years. Only in the past couple, has it really been apparent to my body that I've been playing 4 hour gigs for 28 years. The occasional 2 hour background music gig has become a most welcome comodity.

Here's a good one. Local unrehearsed middle-aged white man "blues" is the norm around here!

I had a friend call me and ask if I would come see his band in Prescott, Arizona.

So, I drove into town, found the bar, got a beer, and sat down.

Straight up 9:00pm. The band comes out. Bass, drums (my pal Scott), keyboards, two guitars, and a sax.

So, off they go. "Pride & Joy" by SRV. And so damned loud one of the monitors vibrated offstage! First guitar takes a solo, second guitar takes a solo, sax takes a solo, first guitar player grabs the harp and blows a solo. Mind you, this is all before the first verse. Ok, first verse. Second verse. Keyboard solo, sax solo, second guitar solo, first guitar solo. Then the break. Harpboy sings second verse over the break, omits entire third verse, adds second break using second verse lyrics again. Then............harp solo, sax solo, guitar solo, big ending.

Total time: 13½ minutes.

Then it's "Born Under A Bad Sign". This time I didn't keep track because my psyche couldn't take it. Ordered a Jameson, then a refill.

Total time: 12 minutes.
Approximate time sax player played signature phrase: 11¼ minutes

Ok, now we are on to "The Sky Is Crying". DEAD SLOW!!
Total time: 8½ minutes. I ordered another Jameson and a fork to stab myself in the eardrum with.

Then 10 minutes of "fast blues in "A" to finish out the set. Double solos all around! Tip your bartender, thank you very much, we'll be right back, blah, blah, blah.......

These guys managed to drag 3 songs and an improv out for an entire set.

Stamina? Not a problem when you aren't really doing anything. And it cuts down on practice time. I decided not to stick around for Set 2. Shook hands, drank up, and hauled ass.

Ritchie

Ritchie -- this is really funny.... and true. I've definitely seen bands just like this...hopefully not played in any...;-) now if they would just add a bass solo to replace one of the 4 guitar solos per song, it might be a little more entertaining..

When you get that bass solo try 8 bars of silence before you start playing it. That way everyone is looking at you when you get your big solo :D

Phatty asked Ray and Jack how they could play so many sets...It was interesting and I thought rather than bury it in Ray's new baby thread that I would recreate it and let it go....

Pre-Katrina, it wasn't unusual for a Bourbon St. gig to be 8x 45minute sets. A bit much for me. We've easily done 4 hours. Hell, one jamband I was in, a 4 hour set might only have 3 tunes in it.

This has been a great thread. My last band would think nothing of a 4 hour gig with four ten minute breaks. Yeah we were tired, but it is a good kind of tired.

I turn 50 in just less than a month.

Now Cowpilot, as I've said, is basically a lazy bunch of buggers and we just finished up a couple of months where we were playing nothing but an hour, hour and a half, then off to the bar and weren't we good?

But we can still do ye olde regular Texas bar gigs. BP has good advice. Don't burn it up within the first 30 minutes. Remember that you're supposed to finish big and save some energy to do just that.

Just turned 52 in Sept.

A little has been said about the drinking part. I drink when I play but nowhere like I did in my heyday. Now I find that water on the bandstand along with my brewski is a big help, keeps you more hydrated.

One problem with doing long sets is that after 45 minutes I need to go to the boys room. :p Needless to say sometimes the sets end a little early. I often joke about my age that if I was wearing Depends onstage I wouldn't need to take a break. :D

this is a good thread. i enjoyed all you guys' stories.

Victim Nation might be lazier than Cowpilot Jack b t in a different way... we'll play any time, anywhere for as long as you let us... but we're too lazy to go out trying to find gigs. Luckily we all have soem hookups so we do get some show but we're not verey active at seeking gigs. we talk and joke about how we've gotta stop being lazy and pick up the phone or send some emails... but honestly, its kindof a pain in the ass

Talking about long sets, last year the band I was in played at The International Festival of the Sea in Portsmouth Dockyard. There were ships of all nationalities there and a number of bars in the dockyard for the crews to frequent in the evening. We got asked to play one of the bars from 8:00 til10:00 without a break. At 10:00 the place was heaving and there was really no way we could stop. I think there woould have been a riot. The owner said could we carry on so we did and ended up doing a 4-hour set without a break. They kept use refreshed with beers and rum and cokes and by a bit of imaginative re-arrangement of numbers we took it in turns to dive out the back to the mens room. Being a mere 59 then it was tiring but I didn't really notice until we stopped. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. After we finished the owner asked if we could come back 3 days later and do it again. We did.
