I've always admired Jack's taste in pickguards.

By far one of my favorite Big Al's thats I've seen so far. Black body, tort guard, rosewood board, non matching headstock 4 banger. That IMO is pretty hard to beat.

Nice one Mark!!

Yes - very, very nice Mark!

Also IMO, the best color combo on any MusicMan bass is Black/Tort/RW with non-matching headstock.

I recently purchased the single H Big Al version (incredible bass!); it came with a black pickguard so I've held off taking pictures until my tort guard gets here - Aziah mailed last week so should be any day now! :D

How are you liking flats on the Big Al 5er? I assume you played it with the rounds briefly before swapping them out?

Not really, Andy. I mean, I didn't leave the rounds on at all, just swapped 'em out and went to work on the setup a little bit. I've been playing flats so long that it's hard for me to even evaluate a bass until I get flats on.

As always, the zingy rounds crowd (my pal Bob says "full harmonic content") will not get this, but I have this idea that using the same strings on each of my basses gives me a pretty clear view about what the bass is doing versus what the different strings do. The BA5 is a killer with flats.

I think that if you want to get some decent mileage out of the neck pickup, though, you're probably going to like rounds better. The way I've been using the bass is (a) just active bridge pickup for that snarly, angry sound I love so dearly and (b) turning on the middle pickup to beef it up for blues and whatnot. With the flats, there's just not enough snap to kick in the neck pickup much....and I know that the neck pickup would be much more useful with rounds, I do know that.

But those main two positions I'm using just KILL with flats, so, for now....
