Dunlop Heavy (transparent red) for all electric guitar and Dunlop Medium (transparent green) for acoustic stuff.

My style is Pop/Rock/Blues

Black Jazz III's, red's slip out of my fingers too easily. I used to use any pick that was textured and 1.0 m, but I've gotten picky about stuff lately.

Acoustically, I still use the big 1.0's, but when recording I like to use the softest pick I can find, just sounds more liquidy to me.

I play some Prog, some Metal, anything with a little chug.

Used to use Green Torex picks becaue of the non-slip surface, then wanted to know what all the the talk about Jazz III was about, so I picked up a package of red and black to try out. I now use the Jazz III.

I use these as a rule:

1mm plastic pics. However the company that made them, DD Manufacturing does not make this type of plastic any more! After months of research, I have found Dunlop Delrin 500's 1.14mm are the closest. When my personal ones run out, I will be using these!

when I do use a pick, it's gotta be the Dunlop Jazz III in basic black:cool:

I read that article in (Guitar One?) on the Jazz III picks so I ordered some. I also ordered some Fender Heavy teardrop jazz picks since I played those in high school.

I could not play either any faster. In fact, it made me slower as the pick seemed to "hang up" more on the string. I also pick with the leading edge of my pick angled up instead of angled down. If you have ever seen Vernon Reid (Living Color), I have the same technique.

My thinking is that with a regular pick that is less pointed, a rounder tip glides over the string easier. I did, however, like the articulation of the pointy ones. It was also easier to get the pinch harmonics but that really isn't part of my style.

So, I'm back to regular Fender heavy picks.

Jazz III only, like so many other players on here. Played with them exclusively after I got a pick from JP at the Jan 19 2002 DT show. They are unmatched as far as I know. The red ones are very very different to me, and I cant play the same with them.

Oh, and not sure if this is normal, but a single pick lasts me only 3-4 weeks before I replace it (uneven wear changes pick shape). For any kind of gigs I always use fresh picks, as Im sure everyone else does.

edit: maybe 2-3 weeks actually

It's a hands down Jazz III thing so far.
There were a few old ones in the box, but all worn.

Just eBayed some new ones to try again.

I've been less impressed with the Tortex picks of late, they seem to warp to a concave shape (thumb side) more than usual.

Anyone else notice this ?

Maybe the Ultex is the fix.

Yes, I have noticed that. They have been like that for years. The last time I used Tortex was around 1990-1991 for that reason among others. Maybe, a thicker Tortex might have been better. I think the lavender ones are thicker than the ones I used, which were green. I think those might not be as prone to developing that curvature you mentioned.

The other thing I don't like about Tortex is the abrasiveness of the attack. Black Jazz III is a little smoother, but it still retains a bit of "edge" in comparison to the Red Jazz III. Black Jazz III is just right for me. Call me Goldilocks.

One more point about the Black Jazz III vs. the Tortex Jazz. I think the Tortex are generally a softer durometer plastic. So, I don't like the lack of chunk and definition.

As a pointless, yet totall fascinating (admit it) tidbit, my first Jazz III was a red one given to me by Michael Angelo (Batio) when he did a Randall clinic at a guitar store I was working at part-time (cleaning guitars mostly) in 1985. :)

Before that I was using stainless steel picks!

I find a pick lasts at most one gig. I end up chucking them out half the time wear or no wear!
