I've seen an SR4 H/S with a custom pickguard that exposes the 3rd or dummy coil pickup. Does anyone know who makes those pickguards? Also, what is the drawback to exposing and raising the dummy pickup?

It's not a custom pickguard made for that. All those guys are doing is cutting their pickguard so they can raise up the dummy coil pickup.
They say it works but you loose the single coil sound as you are now running a humbucker type sound.

I'd like to try it just to see how it sounds. I was hoping somebody was making those pickguards. I'm not cutting mine up.

You can always buy a replacement pickguard from EB, and cut it up if you're doing it permenant.
If all you want to do is try it, just remove your pickguard, and raise up the dummy coil and play it without the pickguard intstalled. If you don't like it, lower the coil back down and reinstall your pickguard. Simple as that.

What the reason for the dummy coil? To reduce hum from the SC pup?

Actually, the one guy I know who has done it did not cut his pickguard himself. The middle pickup is exact between the other two. That's it. It wouldn't be difficult to remove the pickguard and simply send the measurements to have one custom made.
But, I agree that you can simply take the pickguard off, and raise the pickup to see if you like it. I, for one, would rather have the single coil sounds instead of the novelty of the third pickup.
