Hi there,

Question for the one who nows a lot of MM and Sterling by MM gear.

Who nows the difference between the Humbucker from a new Sterling SUB RAY5 (Walnut Satin) and an MM Stringray 4 Naturel (build 1996).

I bought this 5 string to find out if 5 strings is not mixjng me up. Now I experience an difference in tone. A sort of cracking sound is noticable. My MM 4 doesn't have this. My feeling tells kme this is a pre-amp isue or a cracking comming from the humbucker.

Ofcource the battery is new and is not the problem :)

I did open the cavity of the RAY5 and the printboard looks realy cheap and does not give me the feel of quality MM parts. But ofcourse this bass cost only about €300,= here in europe.

But the neck is realy good and the bass itself plays realy cool!

Would be an pickup and or pre_amp upgrade worth while?

Please tell me you experience,

Best regards from Europe!

I dont think that the bass should be cracking or annything. That is not normal and should be a waranty issue. As for the difference between the 2 basses. They are uncomparable imo. Sub series are built to be as cheap as possible. Ebmm basses are built to be as good as possible. There is your difference. Replacement electronics arent available from ebmm but are there from emg, nordstrand, and manny others but i dont have anny experience on these. My advice is save up and buy a sr5.
