Picky!

Pete brought a bunch of the Cool picks and the Ultex Jazz IIIs out to us at the forum bash Desert Domination in 2007. He passed them out, recommending them. The nice thing about the Cool picks is that they're very similar to the Jazz III, but they have a nice textured surface that helps some people grip them better than the Jazz III. I've never really had a problem with that. So, I've just stuck with the Jazz III, because they're everywhere.

Ultex Jazz III's for electric, Ultex 1.14mm for Acoustic. I like more pick surface for Acoustic for some reason. I gotta look into those Red Bear picks.

great topic! I carry around a few medium freebies in my pocket that do not get used when I am home playing. I am finger guy. it is not what I planned but it found me.

They make a sharpy Ultex too but I never bonded with those.

I use the Dunlop 2mm Big Stubby Nylon since a few years now.

For rhythm and especially for strumming acoustic guitar, I turn my pick "upside down" so that the broad end is in contact with the strings and the pointy end is pointing away from the guitar. I choke up on the pick so that the fleshy part of the side of my thumb is strumming right along with the broad pick end. This gives a very different (softer) tone -- a difference comparable to using a different type/material/thickness of pick.

Does anyone else do this, or am I a freak?

That be them I loved the Ultex ones, but now I really dig the Cools.

Rob- I really gave V Picks a shot but just couldn't bond with 'em.

I use the Red Bear Lil'Jazzer and Big'Jazzer with grip holes and standard bevels. I ordered the "Heavy" guage and then requested them in the same thickness as the Jazz IIIs- they're awesome!

I actually perfer the 'grab-bag' picks at my local guitar shop... I get 'em 7 for $1. I have tried the Tortex and Dunlop picks and find the generic ones are just as good.

BTW, I recently switched from Heavy to Medium and I believe I found the solution to my string breakage issues. I used to break strings on my Silhouette all the time - I tried different strings brands, different string gages and even applied the Graphtec saddles, nothing helped. I finally decided to use a medium pick and I have noticed that the strings haven't been breaking on me! Yeah.
