Very cool stuff there! I really like that Candy AL HH myself. Did anybody notice the tobacco AL HH? Looks like a matching headstock and possibly gold hardware???

The pics look fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

Of course, EB comes to Philly the same weekend that I have to be in NC. Figures! Hope Philly area knuckleheads represented.

So, do any of these MM beauties now belong to any knuckleheads?

Someone from the forum bought 2 when I was there, but I can't remember his forum handle.

Hopefully he will see this post and upload some pics of the 2 beauties he bought.

Yep, I am the proud new owner of the Roasted Top Axis and the Spalted Maple Axis. :D

As Derek explained to me, they're both one-offs. I would have posted a show report on the Forum when I got home from Philly on Saturday night, but once they warmed up to room temperature I was playing on them for quite a while and then it was time for bed! The Roasted Top is warmer sounding than a typical Axis. Really sweet sounds -- great for clean sounds on the neck pickup but then really ballsy with the bridge pickup on my gain channel. The Spalted Maple, when I originally saw the photo on the forums, I said, "I could take it or leave it..." But when I saw it in person -- WOW. And she is a really powerful sounding guitar. GREAT for metal rhythm work.

So... Let's talk about the show. EBMM had a killer booth with so many amazing instruments. One offs galore! Roasted maple like you wouldn't believe!

Was really great hanging with Derek and getting to know Glen better. Both really good guys and it was fun to hang with them and talk guitars, jam a bunch of different guitars (they actually had an amp, whereas at NAMM it's gotta be headphones), and chat with all of the folks visiting the booth who had great questions and all recognized the quality they were seeing in this booth. Was neat to see non-EBMM aficionados getting blown away for the first time!

Was also great to meet some of the other Knuckleheads. I got to hang and chat with LegGodt, JNixon, Dr.Strangenote and his wife. Really cool people who all share the passion that we all do for these killer instruments.

This post is getting long so more in a sec with more photos from the show.

The booth was basically a U-Shape with 14 guitars and 18 basses, plus a boatload of strings, shirts, hats, the new Marshall/EBMM gig bags, etc. With a Rivera combo amp and a MarkBass bass amp.

So, let's talk guitars here! Besides the two that I bought, which I talked about in the last post...

First, there were four Axis masterpieces at the show (two of which are 4 feet from me as I type this  ):

I gotta say -- that redwood ASS had a AMAZING TOP! From a distance it just looks like a really nice top with big quilty flame. But when you get up close it is stunning. You can see the growth rings from the tree. And this damn tree must have been about 10 feet in diameter. REALLY AMAZING. So it was calling to me but, alas, it's a hardtail and that's not my cup of tea. If that didn't sell (which would shock me), somebody on the forum should email Derek and see if it's still available. It's f*cking brilliant! I got one photo that shows off the rings:

And then there was the CLB black and Red Axis, which frankly I thought the GC guys were rolling a little on the greedy side so I didn't go for it. But a cool guitar nonetheless.

More in a few minutes....

Now let's work left-to-right in the booth. First off were the AL's:

3.jpg

They had the following on hand:

  • HH Coral Red with All Rosewood Neck
  • HH Mint Green with All Rosewood Neck
  • Stunning HH Vintage Burst with Gold Hardware and the back of the neck was also Vintage Burst
  • HH Vintage Gold with All Rosewood Neck
  • HH Candy Red with All Rosewood Neck

The Vintage Burst AL was absolutely gorgeous. The gold hardware was a beautiful touch, but the thing that really set this apart was that the back of the neck was ALSO Vintage Burst! For a while, we had it backwards on its guitar stand because the back was so killer!

Then onto the JP's. There were two JP6's (original body style with the carved-out forearm contour). Both had roasted necks with Ebony fretboards. Even though these are not JP BFR bodies, they still had the BFR inlay because the Roasted Maple is still a BFR exclusive. One was Black Sugar finish and one was the Turquoise Pearl that Derek posted on the forum last week. The Turquoise Pearl was a REALLY nice finish. Not quite as "light blue" as the photos Derek posted. Here's a pic I took (sorry about the reflections from the flash):

The other JP that they had on hand was a BFR body, in Black Sugar with Roasted Maple neck and Ebony board. I gotta tell you, the Black Sugar color is REALLY nice. From about 4-feet away it really just looks like black. But then, when you get up close (or maybe shine a spotlight on it), the gold pearl (or maybe you'd call it flakes) comes popping out. A REALLY killer finish. I tried to get a close-up:

Sorry about the fingerprints... But this guitar was seeing a LOT of action at the show!

The last two guitars at the show were both Reflex's. There was a blue flametop and a black flametop. They're the GC version with the cream pickup rings:

OK.... It's getting late. Basses tomorrow. All I can say is: Roasted Maple fretboards on these basses were absolutely stunning! And all day the booth had people jamming out bass grooves and admiring the hell out of the Roastedness, the build quality, and the sound of these basses.

All-in-all, besides picking up two very killer and special Axis guitars, this day was TOTALLY worth the 2-1/2 hour drive from Long Island to Philly. I had a great time hanging with Derek, Glen, and my fellow Knuckleheads.

I was great seeing people react to these fine instruments, and I left feeling that it's great to play an instrument that has more behind it than some foreign-owned conglomerate trying to make money by churning out 25,000 pieces a week with plywood bodies and no quality control. Sure, EBMM is a business and is of course in business to make money (duh), but you can just tell from these instruments and the PEOPLE representing them that it's about more than that. And it's cool when you see non-EBMM-converts realizing that. When you see the light bulb go on over their heads and they realize what we all already know!

Thanks for a great day Derek and Glen!

Sterling, you must be proud to have good people like Derek and Glen in on your mission. They done you proud this weekend, BP.
