When I first got my AL with MM-90's I was disappointed with 2 things - the P-90's weren't as "growly" (high output) as the ones on my LP Special, and the pickups covers were black. I thought they'd be white.

So, I ordered a set of Rio Grande BluesBars with white pearloid covers. In the 2 months that it took for them to arrive, I had actually grown to appreciate the MM-90's, and was reluctant to take them out, but they arrived, cost $255, and were going in the guitar, dammit!

So here's what the guitar looked like before:

I just thought the black pickups looked kind of stupid. If I'd known that no one makes white p90 covers, I probably would have gone with a different color scheme.

Anyway, I open it up to find that the pickups are screwed directly onto the wood, unlike with the LP, where they sort of float on springs. I also find the the Rio Grandes aren't normal P-90 size. They're slightly deeper, and the leads come out of the center of the pickup rather than the side:

The AL routing, didn't like either discrepancy.

Well, crap, what to do? Nothing to do but salvage the covers!

Now this wasn't all that easy, they were sort of sealed onto the pickups with epoxy, and I had a heck of a time getting them off, but I managed to figure it out. So, gentleman, we have here some expensive P-90 covers -

Here's the inside of the guitar, just for fun -

On a related note, a standard Gibson P-90 will almost fit. The depth is correct, and the lead comes out of the corner like on the MM-90, but Gibson solders it down to the center. If you could un-solder it, it would fit.

I may buy a 2nd AL and have Jason Lollar build me a custom set just for fun.

tvanveen ~ thanks for documenting and sharing your experience... Sounds like there were some tense moments, but the end result's pretty sweet. The guitar looks great with those covers on the pups! It's funny, I always presumed the AL would be a swimming pool route - don't know why... Nice work!

When I saw the guitar with the pup covers on them all I could say was wow. I also like the way you changed out the knobs. I would love to get some pup covers to put on my blue dawn silo. It was origionally ordered with a white pearloid pick guard then I changed it to abolone. The pups are still white. Regular pup covers just don't fit on PAF pros.

Anyway, Dude! the AL looks great!

Hi Tvaneen, why didn't you just return the pickups? Couldn't you have just painted your original pick-up covers?

Painted them pearloid? That's beyond my ability...

I sold 2 of them to a friend for the same amount I paid for them. I'll put the other up on enay at some point...

I know it was a lot of work, but it turned out nice. I'm not a big fan of the black covers either. Sweet!

tvanveen,

That turned out real nice, good job!
I have a black mm90 version with white pearloid guard. pickupcovers are also black, actually i think all the MM90 AL's have black covers i've never seen one with white or cream covers.

I was wondering, since you also own both versions of the AL, how do you like the MM90's compared to the regular strat type version?
I'm asking because i never had a P-90 type guitar and i wonder wether my MM90 Al has the typical P-90 sound or does the guitar itself have lot to do with it?

Thanks, have fun with the guitar

Thanks!

No, it's not a typical P-90 sound. The MM-90's are lower output, so they're less midrangey, more bright and open than stock P-90's.

Also, the "typical" P-90 rock sound involves mahogany and a shorter scale lentgh.

Yeah, i guess the typical p-90 sound is to be found on a Gibson type guitar?

I love the 2&4 quack on the regular Al, it beats every strat i ever heard.
What i love about the MM90 Al is the bridge pickup, you can get a real nice tele twang without being too harsh.

Thanks,
Michell
