I wouldn't remove the neck personally (says Spud who will shortly be removing the neck from his EVH for a shim experiment!)

Here's a picture of #1 (My BCB AL) all taped up, including behind the nut where you have the transition from a lacquered neck to a "natural" neck - and clothes, sorry strings removed.

What I have found in the past is that when I used some gunstock oil to refurb the back of the neck, a small residue was left around the neck pocket. Tape will stop this happening.

Sorry about the quality of the photo which isn't a true representation of it's "wonderful plumage" ;)

Oh and really in a previous post, I should have said ALOC, SMOC and SOC !!!

...whoooopsie Steffen, one more thing:

Yepp - taping the fretboard should be a must when polishing frets.
When cleaning fretboard, I'd rather tape the frets themselves, too.

...anyway, should you decide to polish your frets with the steel-wool too (which has great effects !), try to buff them with a piece of raw cow hide afterwards. I got this hint from a luthier some time ago and this adds the certain something to a good polish job.

Cheers

Thanks Spud, that is exactly what I would / will do. Planned to do it this evening but didn´t find the time.

There are a few things I keep my fingers of, because I have to much respect or fear to destroy something. Working on the nut is one thing. Removing the neck is another thing (did it on cheapos and I know that you easy the screws/holes are destroyed)

I will use lemon oil first (was very unsure if I shall use it on unfinished maple fretboard, Axilla and jongitarz convined me :)). If not all grime will be eliminated I have to use steel wool. Maybe it´s not necessary.

Tape the pickups (...), dont worry about the frets though!

Taping the frets or not :confused::confused: , I think I have to try on one fret what the steel wool does to the fret

Oh, I didn´t know there´s a SOC already exisitng. Who is the president?

That's a good idea to try on one fret first.

I use 0000 guage wire wool on mine - but the necks have never been that dirty.
0000 guage is basically what they use to do a fret polish and the idea of Axila is a good one to try too.

So now is your chance to become President of the SOC !!

All in favour "Say aye"

How about some "before" and "after" photos ?

That´s an honour, but there may be one little problem... the AL feels so good, that I eventually plan to sell the silo. It´s great no matter, but the AL fits me better. Keeping both is not that affordable

Of course. Hopefully this weekend. Friday is national holiday in Germany so I hope to find the time, if the hangover is not that worse :D

Here they are.
At the beginning:

After a treatment with lemon oil:

A bit of grime stayed in the pores. As I don´t have 0000 steel woool (hard to find, everywhere only 000), I tried a bit of 1000 sandpaper, which helped a bit, but made some brighter spots on the fretboard. But after a treatment with tru oil and gunstock wax (like recommended here) it looked ok and felt like NEW (=sensational). So the AL is fine now and I will give the Morse and the Silo a oil & wax treatment as it was very easy and made a HUGE difference!

Gorgeous! Congrats on scoring an absolute classic. Those original pinkies are fantastic :)

Btw if you find a silent circuit they're easy to wire in. (I put one in mine.)
