I was in Munich today and had a few minutes before my train left so I decided to drop in the local music store there. They had a nice black SR5 that they let me spend a few intimate moments with. This is actually the first time I've had a chance to play any MM 5er and I can now say I am official regretting not having purchased my 25th as a 5 string (They did not have any in stock when I was there so at least I have an excuse) :)

I spend the train ride home trying to figure out why I have not liked any of the (non EBMM) 5 strings I've tried up until now... Bear in mind I have not been playing for very long so a lot of the reason can also be accredited to my inexperience.

I think a lot of it comes down to the SR5 having the same scale as my 25th 4HH. That really helps the neck feel natural and after a couple of minutes I had the feeling I was already starting to adjust. The tighter string spacing actually felt very comfortable. I definitely should NOT have done that today.

Now I have some serious GAS for a Big AL 5

I feel ya.
I had an SR4H. Played well, sold it. Why? Well, stupid is hard to get rid of.
Tried out a fiver of another brand... just did NOT do well. So, the SR4 was gone, and I was on to other 4s.
fast forward to two months ago. I had sold a four stringer, then saw the 10 year old (nearly like-new!) SR5H (in my profile pic) and just jumped. Yep, without having tried it.

Wow. I was amazed at how "naturally" it fit. So glad I did.... and playing that B string is low-end joy.

For the record, I sold two SR 4s in my plan, but part of the plan went wrong! I now have 3 EBMMs on order, and I feel like my collection will hit a high once they get here.

I missed my SR4s so ordered a new one. It all worked out, and the Big Al 5 is an early 30th present, (mainly funded by myself).

I had played an Ibanez top dollar sound gear 5 string for over eight years due to it's very small neck. I'm not in my twenties any longer, and I strayed away from larger basses. When I was ready for a change I wanted something that had more punch and a better high end than what my mahogany could produce. I tried an EB StingRay 5 and fumbled around on it for a few moments before deciding to take it home. In just a short time I had adjusted to the wider neck and string spacing. It has been good for me,making me work a little harder and helping to keep my fingers limber. I now love the bass and the tone is a killer.

If you like the 25th and the 5 strings option then there's the Reflex, if you get the white one it matches Germany Football players kit! :D

Good idea... but something that is not widely know here is the fact that I am NOT German :eek::eek:

I'm actual "Made in the USA" but I dont think i would play a bass with stripes and stars :D

The problem with the Reflex is that is does not have a quilted top and is not offered in Venetian Red :(

I have found a beautiful 20th SR5 HS California Sunset with a quilted top that could steer me away from a Big Al 5. The price is insane but maybe I can work on that :D

Just saying but don't overlook the magic of the stock SR5 - those basses are great. I still go back to mine over and over again. Perhaps you need an SR5 and a Big Al 5 :D

AD is right there's no permanent cure for GAS ;)

Got a Ray5 and a Bongo5, next in line would be the Big Al5 single H, just because I think it is going to be a true classic one day.

Anytime I play the Ray 5 I it sounds more awesome to me. It feels like the all rosewood neck makes it sound a lot darker than my other EBMMs. Can that be true?

Edit: I may have to add: I tuned them all the same....:D

Yea, I'm definitely not going to overlook that. Basically I've got 3 options.

#1 Buy a 5er in addition to my 25th. That would make it an BA5 or SR5... Maybe a classic if I can get my hands on one to try out. Dont know if the 7" radius neck will be my thing. Our financial planning would not make this possible within the next 2 or 3 years. Got to keep priorities straight.

#2 Sell the 25th 4HH and purchase a 25th 5 String. This is highly unlikely as I can't find any 5 string HH or single H's here in Germany :( This would be my preference as the 25th is simply perfect.

#3 Sell the 25th and Purchase the 20th I mentioned... You see I have this thing for figured wood... I truly believe it makes me play better ;)
