Played my buddy's JP and I have a problem..

It sounds like the trem springs are echoing through the amp He has two of them and they both do this...why is this and what can be done to fix it?

edit: It also had some staying in tune issues. I'm heavy handed and can beat the hell out of my Axis and it never goes out of tune, these seem ultra sensitive and seem like I had to be more of a finesse player

1. You can put cotton in the springs to damp the ringing. I personally like the natural reverb.

2. There should not be tuning issues, the JP has a killer trem. Probably a setup issue.

If you're heavy handed, a JP is probably not the best guitar for you. I wouldn't recommend any guitar with a fully floating trem to anyone who plays heavy. That's probably where the noise and the tuning issues come from.

I own both an Axis and a JP, and while the JP is definitely my favorite axe, the tuning stability is better on the Floyd equipped Axis. JP is definitely a finesse player, and designed his guitar accordingly.

I had the same problems with my JP. Grease the nut... It'll be fine. The proper way would be to use nut grease. I sometimes use the poor man's method: Pencil Lead. 2B will be fine... Heh...

i foudn this too when i first got my jp

just stuffed some cotton wool inside each spring and problem solved
there are no negative side effects of doing this

Another slightly more visually appealing solution to the trem spring noise is to find heat shrink tubing that is about the same inside diameter as the outside diameter of the springs. Once heated, it looks good, solves the problem and will never screw up on you like foam, cotton or other spur-of-the-moment solutions. Be sure to let the heat shrink be a little longer than the spring.

That sounds like a good idea. I don't think heating it down is....only because the heat shrink has a 2 to 1 shrink ratio. Once it is heated, it forms to the spring and as the springs move (and they will), it will pinch in the shrink or tear it.
But, if you don't shrink it down, it will let the springs move frehley and still keep them from rattling....

I've never had a tuning problem out of either of my JP's but I did have the spring ringing issue. I used paper towels to dampen the noise. It's under the trem cover so I didn't see the need for cosmetics.
