HowD Funseekerz,
plenty of timez her, I've noticed people mention "thin" necks, such as on pree EB MMz, and I'd like to know do they actually mean "thin " as opposed to thick, or rather, "narrow" as opposed to wide, I have also acquired a lovely bass by G & L (oopsie??):rolleyes:which has a very "narrow" neck, which is somewhat "thicker" than her sister which also has a "wider" neck ...
I've never played a Sterling, but I'm assuming that her neck will be "narrower" that an SR4 neck ... EH???
Pls Advise,
ATB/PL:)

To me thin and thick define the front to back dimension

Narrow and wide define the width of the finger board.

what he said.

that's also seems to be how the majority of bassists and guitarists I've met precive thin vs. fat and narrow vs. wide when discussing neck dimensions.

another factor to consider is neck profile which can mean a world of difference, IME, between necks with seemingly the same thickness.

and think "profile" by the shape of the neck, as if you were viewing it head-on, with the headstock pointed right at you. Among the choices: round (base-ball bat), D-shaped, V-shaped, assymetrical, all are different profiles used that I am familiar with.

if you already mentioned it - my pre-EB has a thin, soft C profile wheres my '00 SR4 has a thick C profile, much like the necks on 50s 7enders.
thats not to say all EBMMs have baseball bat profile - my mid-90s fretless SR4 has a super thin C profile neck which is steadier than the neck on any bass I've owned to date.

+1
Often times all that is talked about is the nut width and the neck radius; for me the nut width and the rear profile make all the difference and fingerboard radius not so much
A 1 5/8" SR neck is perfect in my hands but that same width can be a horrible fit based on different rear profile

I have found the neck profile, width and thickness of the SR5 and Bongo5 to be perfect for me.

It is by far the easiest 5 string neck I have played on and makes my gigs a breeze. My old F***** 5 string neck used to have me cramping up after 1 set!!

Makes it virtually impossible to own another brand!!

Thanx for whatever, I think

Some of the repliez continue the madness and some seem to hit the nail on the head:eek:
In this context I'm tending to equate the oft used word"thin" with "narrow, as in nut or fingerboard "width ... as mentioned by some, above:cool: otherwise, I think some of you are inaccurate or aloof in your usage of the word "thin ... and in my attempt to clarify, I draw attention to a 6 string as an extreme example of a "wide", not a "thick" neck:rolleyes:
and for another example, I think of my 5 strings as having "wider" not "thicker" necks than my 4 strs...

OK class, and now for the weekly quiz, realizing that whosoever gets the correct answer, gets the next couple of daze off for a long weekend and no more school until after Monday;)
Q"Who'z got black ballz???
