Something tells me that if you gave this guy a solid gold guitar he'd still play the one with the spidey on it. Good luck. :p

That spiderman guitar almost falls in the "so bad it's amazing category." Its like a musician's midlife crisis. I'm getting flashbacks to the 80's when my uncle the roadie would bring his two ibanez atrocities to our house to show them off. Tell him the age of pointy superstrats and custom airbrushing are over. It's also time to let go and move on... to ebmm. You should also let him know Venom will always be cooler than spiderman. Even in spiderman 3. Venom might be Eric from That 70's show, but at least he didn't go EMO and have a dance number...

Well wow guys, this is my mate Tony L you are psycho-analizing, you know the meaning of friendship? I wouldn't judge your mates. :) :) :) 3 smilies there so you know I am not upset.

But hell I am trying to coach him towards EBMM guitars, like Mr. BP said, ther's only so much one can tell a guitarist knucklehead when they've got their mind set on something (usually as wrong as pointed airbrushed guitars, they've gotta have 'em apparently).

And as for his spiderman stuff, well there is actually a very cute story to that, so let me explain, Tony is about 47 yrs old, has 4 kids in their mid 20' to early 30's (yeah he started early in life with his kids) from his kids he has about 3 or 4 grand children and when they have a family get together he is their their main attraction he is his grand children's hero, to see their amazement when he surprised them with that outfit is priceless!

Family values today are scarse and this guy has a family that I admire for their tight love and respect.

And... isn't it cool  for a kid to have a grandad that plays in a band, rides a Yamaha R1 and dresses up as Spiderman? :)

OT - Hard to justify that when he's got an R1. There isn't a single Honda I'd take over a 1,000cc R1.

OT - Fireblade. Every day.

Suzuki?! I want my bike to last at least a winter :p

Imagine the little ones faces as he wheels out a BFR JP6. Much ooh-ing and ahh-ing.

Get that man to a store and let loose on some fine machinery, he clearly knows what he likes. Good man!

I am in the same boat. My guitarist has checked out some EBMM's and he just does not like them. He plays ESP and it is a nice guitar and it has great tone. He was interested when I was talking about them and he came over to play a few of mine....he just couldn't get comfortable with it. It happens.

Capt...my drummer is a Spiderman fanatic as well....but I think your friend has him beat with the motorcycle...lol. Very cool.

Wow. 3 grandkids at 47... I just had my first kid at 27 and that just seems like crazy amount of stress. I hope you didnt take my post as bad mouthing, it would seem your pal is a stand up guy, and it was meant all in good fun but due to the format (being written and not spoken) the playfulness might have been lost. I agree family values are first rate. I too collect comics as well as zombie movies, etc. If I have word of serious advice for you, don't pressure him too much. Last band I was was gung ho about gibsons and marshalls and it just got annoying.

There's a question that needs to be answered by the guitarist you're trying to bring over to the EBMM side. How does he use HSH guitars? Does he use the middle pickup alone? Does he use the 2/4 position on the toggle switch?

If you answered yes to either of the two questions, the SM-Y2D, while being an extremely phenomenal guitar, isn't going to fit the bill exactly. When one uses the single coil pickup on the Y2D, it doesn't sound like the single coil of an SSS guitar. That's because of the positioning. Also, with the Y2D, you can't use the neck humbucker and single coil pickups together. You can use the bridge and single coil pickup together; but you don't get the quack you would get from another HSH or SSS guitar.

All that said, the Standard Morse would get you there and you can get it with a Floyd too. The switching, albeit very logical in function and design, can be a little overwhelming at first...

My $0.02 worth....

Thanks to all, Tony said he can't wait for me to disembark at the end of the week, so he will go to the store and try the Silo that he saw on the EB website, he said he likes this one....

But please sit comfortably before you read this...

ready?

take a deep breath...

U sure you can handle this?

ok here goes:

He said if he buys this Silo he will have a Floyd Rose "Edge" fitted on it, same as the one on Vai's Ibby's model.

Ok don't shoot me!! at least he is getting an EBMM but.... it doesn't finish here... he wants DiM&&io on it!

Ok I am running now. :D

P.s.: I've emailed Tony telling him it already comes with DiMarzio so he is 99.9% keen on it now.

no need for a double locking system when its that stable without!! ;)

let me reiterate: TRY THE JP!
it got the thin flat neck and an insanely stable trem!

MrM

ps: honda riders are pu..... coff coff... err.. kittykats or h.r.a.p as we said back in the day..
mind you the only honda back then was the goldwing and to call it a sports machine would be an insult :D

I have told him, not once but 3 times about the JP, but has already told me that the silo p/up configuration it's what he is looking for. But I guess he will try what's available in the store and make his mind up. I told him to promise me not to try any Jap guitar or any pointed headstock one he sees in the shop.

The vintage trem is as good and stable as a floyd...ask Lukather! It can be made to float, again as per the Luke...

The Silo has the same bridge as the JP (only with a different look) and can be floated, with some pretty remarkable results. Have him try that before he goes and dirties up a perfectly good Silo :p

I guess there's no real way until he actually sits down and trys them each out and see what he likes.

It's easy to say "i like this and that in a guitar" but each guitar produces its own tone, and upon player others, its easy to discover something you didn't know was there.

Dear Capt.

Trying to help a skinny stringer is like trying to navigate your ship through the channels of Venice.

You can only light candles, sit in lotus position in the dark and read as many fortune cookies as possible....

My bassist was successful. He got me addicted. So there is hope! :D
