Some of you may have read my previous threads and if so you already know I spent every cent I had just to acquire my JPX. I love this guitar to death and dont regret buying it at all. The only problem is my GF has gotten accepted to medical school so now we're using the money I had saved to buy her a new Macbook for college.

Also, she's getting upset with me. She said this to me last night:"YOU SPENT ALL THAT MONEY ON THE GUITAR AND ITS JUST SITTING IN IT'S CASE! GO OUT AND BUY A CHEAP AMP! YOU DONT ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE THE BEST OF THE BEST!"

Now.. I AM willing to wait and buy the MARK V that I want but she's getting upset and to be honest I am REALLY antsy to just get going. So I've decided that I wouldn't mind investing about 400 dollars into a "cheap" amp. Any recommendations? I will mostly be attempting to cover Dream Theater songs. Also I will probably end up selling the 400 dollar amp for the Mark V.

YOu can scour Ebay and craigslist and get a decent used one for around 250-350. They're not going to take you into Triple Recto, or cranked MarkV territory, but its a bonafide awesome rockin' little machine. It's what I used as my practice amp before I moved out here to Korea.

If I were in your shoes (and I'm glad I'm not), I would pick up a Line 6 HD300 ($329) or an HD400 ($399). The amp modeling is great and it sounds fantastic through headphones. This will enable you to start practicing right now. Which, honestly, is the most important part. Great tone is NOTHING without great chops.

You can use one of those for now and then use it in FX Only mode, bypassing the amp modeling, in the effects loop of the Mark V once you get it.

Then you'll have the amp you want AND the effects to get all those JP sounds.

it's a great little amp, affordable but it's not what I want :( I just need to get over myself! AH!

Devin, you're situation justifies a modeling amp at the moment. The reality is, and will always be, you just can't get MarkV tones at 300 bucks. If you could, Mesa would be out of business.

Modeling gets you modestly close, and will suffice for now until you can afford something better. Besides, it's time to practice and get them chops anywhos. :D

Honestly, I suggest getting a Roland Micro Cube (really one of the best practice amps!) and hold off on getting all the crazy gear for a bit. Take time to learn the guitar and develop your chops. I suggest getting lessons with the money. Keep in mind, Petrucci doesn't need a JP or a Mark V to sound like Petrucci; that equipment just complements his playing VERY well. At this point Chops > Gear.
