Usually I'm just a lurker. I read the posts and enjoy hearing how others share my love for EB guitars - the Axis in particular. Normally I wouldnt post but due to some changes in my life I wanted to share a bit of advice for others out there.
I remember years ago being a teenager seeing Eddie Van Halen with this AMAZING looking guitar. Now, I'm an Eddie fan but not an Eddie style guitar player - i dont tap or anything along those lines - so normally what Eddie plays doesnt really matter to me. But this guitar was just phenomenal looking - and at that point I had no idea what it really sounded like or played like. I mean ya cant judge it by what he sounds like - its like apples to turnips LOL. However a few months later picking up some strings they had an amber model on display at the local music store and I asked to play it. Thats when I fell in love with it. The feel of the neck, the amazing crunch - just a perfect guitar. And having never played a guitar with a Floyd before I was stunned - I never went out of tune! For a kid who was used to constantly having to tune up it was a revelation. The way the guitar hung around my neck, just everything about it - even the smell LOL started a love affair that has lasted all these years. That guitar was the epitome of perfection. However being a kid I couldnt afford the price tag and vowed that one day....
Times changed and Eddie ( foolishly IMHO ) moved onto another guitar but my love was still there. It was just a matter of time but like life as usual has other plans. Save up a lil here and "honey I'm pregnant" or just the normal things we all go thru on a daily basis. It was still "one day"...... just down the road a lil more ...
In 2006 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Scary but it coulda been worse - they coulda said terminal brain cancer 6 months to live. And initially it wasnt much of an issue until the last year or so. Alot of tingling in my hands and feet, Im a lot less coordinated than everbefore. My balance is kinda shot - I sometimes walk like I have two left feet attached backwards LOL and my fingers dont move across the neck of a guitar quite the way they used to. Something that has brought me so much joy for so many years has become a struggle.
Just so we can be clear on something - I'm notposting this to elicit sympathy - I dont want nor need it. I have 3 beautiful children who just the sight of fill my heart to the point of bursting. I married a woman who happens to be my best friend and is my rock, someone I'm thrilled that I get to spend the rest of my life with. Even with MS I'm still luckier than most. Recently it looks like I'll be losing my job because of the issues I have with my balance make it unsafe since I work at heights. I couldnt ask for a better woman at my side when things get rough and right now things are a lil rough and scary. It's cool cuz we'll make it.
Now the real point of my story and the reason I'm posting - Guys/Gals - enjoy every minute you get to play. Realize that its a gift we have that many unfortunate people will never ever be able to experience. For some its just a hobby, some wanna be the big time- whatever your dream is - chase it. But dont lose sight of whats really important- the music. The thrill of figuring out a new song on your own, the feel of the wood under your fingers, losing yourself so that you and your guitar become one and whatever emotions youre feeling come thru and you can express yourself thru your playing. It doesnt matter your level of skill - if your a newbie or a Steve Vai - play for the love of playing and dont ever lose sight of that. Enjoy every single minute that you can because you never know when it might be taken away from you. Trust me....it sucks. And just like when you find the perfect woman/man for you and you marry them - when you find that perfect guitar or bass that is your musical soulmate - get it. The connection between a player and the guitar that was made for them is just as real as love. And it can push you to new heights in your playing that you never thought possible. Just like a the right partner in life can make you a better person - the right guitar can make you a better player. And when you find the right one - you never let it go, stay faithful to it. Due to everything that has changed I may never get my Axis- but she is still mine and I'm just considering this an extended courtship. Because she is my musical soulmate. Every chance I've ever had to play one I've taken and its reaffirmed my love for her. Even if by the time I finally get around to getting her I can no longer play I will be content to just brush my hands across her open strings and imagine the music we would have made.
MORAL OF THE STORY - LOVE EVERY MINUTE YOU GET TO PLAY AND FIND THE GUITAR YOU LOVE TO PLAY.
PEACE!

Welcome Jimmie,
I'm glad you are taking the positive outlook on life, most people would take the negative one. Even though you don't have a EBMM Axis, yet. Stick around, this site is for EBMM lovers and players, there's a lot of great people here, you'll love it here.

Cheers bro,

Scottie.

Welcome to a great forum.
Life changing experience with me - a near fatal car crash.
made me re evaluate my life - got to play again in font of audiences and rediscover my love and infuriation with guitars. Seize the day - tell the people that matter that you love them and give 'em a hug.

Keep an eye out on the forum for second hand guitars - you get to see some real bargains.

I hope that the "one day" will come.

Great post (applies to life as well)! You know some of us whine cause our tone may not be perfect, or we're having a bad day and are too tired to practise or play for that matter...excuses or reasons to spend more money on toys, or gadgets, trying to get inspiration from these material things...well this is inspiration, and you are so right. Just being able to play, is a blessing in itself that some of us take for granted. I read a very heartwarming quote once,
"Remember, the journey is the reward!" So true, you're journey my friend although challenging, shall reward you!!!

Thank You

Hey all,
I would like to have replied to each of y'all individually but 1. I can't seem to get it to where i can respond to each post LOL and 2. my hands being what they are these days its alot of typing LOL and woulda taken me 2 weeks to get thru it. I want to say this to all of you -THANK YOU. The welcome I have received here has been overwhelming and heartwarming. Considering that the only initial thing we all have in common is a love of EBMM guitars the kind words and fellowship has been remarkable. Scottie mentioned there are alot of great people here - and he is absolutely correct. I've spent my time in the past lurking in the shadows and reading but that is going to change. For those who say my story inspired them , thank you. If you hugged someone and squeezed a lil harder or when you picked up your guitar you closed your eyes and got lost for a few more seconds then I accomplished what I set out for. Spudmurphy - you're exactly right - seize the day! Lawdaddy - I dont know about best first post ever but if anyone who read it "felt it" then I'll settle for "pretty good first post". And I hope you're right about an Axis being in my future - right now my Magic 8 ball keeps saying "outlook not good" but this is the same Magic 8 ball that told me yes when I asked if I would be riding a dragon when I picked up Cyndi Lauper for our dinner and a date night! So obviously my Magic 8 ball is not very reliable so I'll take your feeling over it any day. I dig positive. Right now its just on the very very backburner with everything going on especially my job being up in the air. But I'm still holding on to "someday"....and when that day comes I cant wait to post it on here!!!!!!!!!!!! And LisaIs - my wife didnt find her "Axis" in me - if anything I found it in her. I got the better end of that deal - take any superlative you can think of and thats her... she's my soulmate, best friend, laugher of bad jokes etc she also gave me three great children.Thats some pretty cool stuff if you ask me. Basically- i was just passing time until I met her. I didn't start living until I found her. For the record - while the MS did make me more aware of my emotions I was this sappy before I found out and said the same thing about her before I knew I had this disease. LOL She calls me a teddy bear - the kids can turn me into a water fountain. It's these kinds of things that make me say that even with the MS and some of the problems from it, the uncertainty the future, I'm on of the luckiest guys on the planet. I've got a good woman who loves me, 2 "Daddy's" boys and a "Daddy's" girl and a mutt thats one of those once in a lifetime kinda dogs.I'll never be the richest guy, the healthiest guy or look like Brad Pitt, but what I do have outweighs what i dont have any day of the week!
So once again - thank you all for the amazingly kind reception you have given me here. Not only does EBMM make the best guitars in the world they also have the best players in the world and it shows on the forum! If ya take anything from my post at all squeeze a little harder with the hugs and be more generous with them and when ya pick up your guitar to play remember how lucky we are as guitar players. Just think of the people in the world who cant play and have no idea what they're missing. They will never know what its like to close both eyes, forget everything else and just let the music take control. If anyone ever debates the existence of the soul explain to them that moment when you're playing, when the brain stops thinking, the world drops away, and the music is the only thing that matters or even exists. That my friends is proof of the soul. Because where else would that kind of music come from? When people use the term "musically gifted" they have no idea how right they are. Because we are given a gift amd we should never lose sight of that. And if you happen to have an Axis jam a little bit on her for me.
Peace,
Jim

Great post Jimmie and great out look on a difficult current situation. Glad you stepped out of the shadow and jumped into the waters here as we have a great forum with a good bunch of guys. I wish you the best and it is amazing what can be done with mind over matter, and with your outlook on life I know you will find a way to squeeze music out of your guitar for years to come.
