Okay folks, here's the first video from our night at the Pony. The third song of a 22 song set. We're settled in and doing our thing... Audio feed is live from the board and the Bongo is prominently featured in the mix! :D

Would love your honest feedback - good, bad or indifferent - no such thing as a wrong opinion!

Enjoy!

Thanks guys. I am very fortunate to play with a group of guys that support the bass being right on the front line.

And similarly fortunate to play an eclectic mix of top-hits across very different genres - with most having one key element in common... ;)

Looks like a good gig, Anthony.

"I saw her standing there" is a pretty good finger strengthening song, especially at that tempo. :)
I remember when I first started playing it I had to go over it a number of times to get my hand strong enough to finish strong.

Ah - you've discovered an additional video post!

Yes - that took a few times to get comfortable with. It's a favorite song of ours that we've been play for a long time, and makes it into just about every set we do. That has certainly helped me develop a level of comfort with the tune.

I have also found it's helps to run through Iron Maiden tunes in the car from time to time as sort of a virtual practice for my right hand - everything else then seems reasonably easy to keep up with. ;)

Hi Anthony,

I see The Stone Pony hasn't changed a bit. I played there many years ago, and had a blast.

Now onto the comments:

I thought the band was nice and tight, and liked the 3 camera shoot. Looked smooth.
Was the bass direct into the board pre or post?
What amp were you using, as I thought the bass tone was very HI FI sounding, if that makes any sense.
I thought it lacked some roundness for my liking, but if it's a more modern tone you're after, you nailed it.

I hope I didn't offend you, but you wanted honesty.

It sounds good and tight. The vocals and backups are great and there's a lot of energy.

My only criticism would be to lighten up on the right hand touch or raise the action (or use heavier strings) as you're getting a lot of clicking from digging in too hard. The occasional click here and there is okay, but it's tough to listen to constantly.

Meant this when I said it! :D

We had a four-camera set-up (fourth behind the drummer got limited play time) done by a relatively new, local video team. Mixed live by a technician side-stage. This was a family operation, with the guy's teenage daughter running the video mix - we were pleasantly surprised and pleased with the results.

My amp is a Ampeg SVT8-Pro, direct to the board, post EQ. I run the amp generally flat with a slight bump in the mids. Both extra low and bright switches out (off). Bongo flat and set 50/50/50 across the neck/bridge and mag/piezo p/u.

It is a more aggressive, cutting tone - but that's exactly me! ;)

Totally appreciate the honest feedback - thanks!

It is part of what I am going for (the "clank"). Though I will be the first to admit I may be slightly overcompensating for distinction in my attack as a finger player (I miss the sharp strike of pick-playing, but prefer finger-style for me). I do play with an aggressive style which only adds to the effect.

But - now that you mention it, I will go back and have a listen for this specifically, as well as validate with the Band and adjust if necessary.

Thanks - love others perspectives and opinions.
