Those guys are one of my favorite bands.

Colin has excellent taste in basses, too!

Colin is an Ernie Ball Music Man Endorsee, and loves the stealth black bongos. He is a great guy and bass player. Glad to have him as a part of the fam....

I recommend "Blackest Eyes" from In Absentia or "Halo" or "Deadwing" from Deadwing. Actually, they're all pretty good.

If the song "Blackest Eyes" is about a raccoon, I'll buy the cd without hearing it. :D

What kind of stuff do they play?

These guys are incredible! I got into them recently and emediately realized I had to have everything they have ever done (which is a lot). I was thinking about getting a new bass and when I saw their DVD "Arriving Somewhere...", I saw that bongo and thought: I MUST HAVE ONE OF THOSE!!! Which is actually what brought me to join this forum. I am currently awaiting my bongo which should be arriving here around late April or May!:) :) :) :) If your looking to check these guys out the better albums to check out IMO are "Stupid Dream" (Some of the best bass work here) "In Absentia" (Some of the best songs here) or "Deadwing (Heavier metalish stuff here). Or just get their DVD "Arriving Somewhere..." and work your way backwards from there. As for my personal favorite songs by them again IMO : Stars Die, Drown With Me, Trains, Strip the Soul (awsome bassline), Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled, The Sound of Muzak, Stranger By The Minute, and Don't Hate Me (nother sick bassline here).

I know I wrote a lot here but I really can't tell you how much I feel like this is one of the most underrated bands EVER! The fact that they are not a huge deal probably has a lot to do with the fact that they are reeeeeeaaaaaaaallly hard to describe in terms of genres. But I would perhaps venture to say they land musically somewhere between Pink Floyd and Tool.

I got into these guys back in the 'Tarquin's Seaweed Farm" days!

EEK! Man, that was a long time ago!

I had a cassette of TSF and the second one.

Love, Death, & Mussolini was the second one. I still have both of those. If anyone is missing them.

Then I didn't get anything new until "The Sky Moves Sideways".

That and "Stupid Dream" are still my favorites.

I saw them years ago. They were kinda boring on stage. Just stood there. And Steve Wilson acted like he was too good to sign autographs.

I have Deadwing and In Absentia as well. Very "moody" music with some rockus guitar here and there and some odd-time signatures thrown in. I believe Colin used a Wal bass for both recordings though(he thanks the Wal Guys in the inner sleeve) and used the Stealth Bongo for the Deadwing Tour. Steven did some of the bass tracks on Deadwing I believe.

That is true buster... he used a frettless wal bass on all of the past recordings (with perfect intonation). and the bongo on the last tour only. before that it was a stingray onstage and before that it was his wal which i believe he stopped using for fear that it would be damaged. I belong to the porcupine tree forum and asked a question on there about what kind of gear he uses. I actually got a response from Colin himself!!!!!!!!!!!! He told me a very detailed history of what he has used through out his career. He said that he really enjoyed playing the bongo on their last tour. He uses mostly EBS neodimium amps and speakers and effects. At one point he had a Tech 21 300 amp head but it was stollen. Now (for the album that will come out in mid april) he uses an extended range spector bass so he can tune it down to a C, F, Bb, Eb tuning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nuts:eek: If anybody wants more info I can copy and past his letter to me. The forth coming album will be called Fear Of A Blank Planet. If anybody likes these guys I would also recommend Oceansize. nother amaaaaazing british group (bassplayer plays stingrays too!).
