Ritchie I would agree with you that Steven Wilson does seem like an arragant musician. He admits himself that he does a lot of rockstarish guitar posturing. But although its not an excuse, perhaps it may be forgivable considering he is one of the few guitarists in the world that might be able to give players like David Gilmour a run for their money in the soulful songwriting and soloing department. Plus, I don't know, it kinda seems cool when a band seems godlike on stage. They gotta look like they know exactly what their doing. Just my opinion. Obviously I'm a little nutty about these guys.:D

This is why the Beatles are still the best band ever.

They WERE gods, of course, but they acted goofy and cool.

Just a random note there.

PT are my fave band - always sound sound both on disc and live. Go and see them if you get the chance.

Colin's Bongo on the live DVD "Arriving Somewhere...." sounds incredible

Lefty - thanks for the heads up on Oceansize. Had a quick listen on i-Tunes - very good!

Don't get me wrong. I love the band. I have all the albums. And I'd go see them again. As for looking like they know what they are doing, I agree somewhat. I don't think that it means standing like a statue. It certainly doesn't make me think they appear "godlike". Just for an example, watch the Queen - Live at Wembley DVD. They obviously know what they are doing. But they are also animated. Musically, they were perfect. But not a lot of personality, I'm afraid. To be fair though, it could have just been an off night. I've had my share. And so should they. :)

I belong to the porcupine tree forum and asked a question on there about what kind of gear he uses. I actually got a response from Colin himself!!!!!!!!!!!! He told me a very detailed history of what he has used through out his career. [...] If anybody wants more info I can copy and past his letter to me. The forth coming album will be called Fear Of A Blank Planet.

Yes, please! I'm a big fan of PT and Colin Edwin!!
Probably will get a Stealth Bongo at some point just to have one of them basses Edwin played in that DVD... ;)

If anybody likes these guys I would also recommend Oceansize. nother amaaaaazing british group (bassplayer plays stingrays too!).

Saw them last week. Actually learned about them as supporting act for PT a couple of years ago. The bass player didn't play a StingRay, but some funny looking bass I've not seen before... However, the bass player of their supporting act Sion did play a Sterling, also on their CD, which sounded way cool and they got a better bass sound than Oceansize.

I'm a VETERAN player, but got introduced to these guys by my drummer son.

They are really good and versatile -- you might hear everything from mandolin to metal guitars in a song -- songs are complex, interesting, singing and harmonies are great, lots of interesting dynamics. The drummer is incredible - lots of space, Bonham power, and he even swings.

The bass player is very melodic and has a great sound (no surprise now!)

check em out. That DVD will be a great Xmas present!

I had the privilege of seeing them last week in Atlanta. Colin used the Spectors for most of the show, but pulled out the Bongo for the encores!! Man it sounded good! Met the band afterwards and they were all very nice.

Very nice man, but he's a little guy! I guess those basses give him a much bigger presence! :D

Was at the PT show in Zurich yesterday evening. Big disappointment (to me).
No Bongo at all. The bass sound was completely buried in the kick drum most of the time -- no wonder, since the kick was about the same loudness as the rest of the band. And even in intros where Colin should be heard well, he was just not cutting through with those Spectors.

Disclaimer: The venue is simply crap, soundwise. Old theatre with low hanging galeries, too small, too many people, and way too much smoking. And the songs of Fear Of A Blank Planet just don't speak to me. So, I may not have been in my best mood...
