Potential buy - Old Silo

Hi folks,
I have a possible purchase of an 89 fixed bridge Silo in trans orange - serial number 89024.
Now I have to decide - do I go for the LE Buttercream axe I showed you a few days ago or the 89 6 bolt ??
It has rosewood board and its an SSS. The expected wear etc but nothing too major - just lots of minor body dings, but looks in good shape from the pics. BTW - how do I attach pics to show you. ?

I'd really value some opinions on the older Silos.

BTW its way cheaper than the cream SSS LE from 2001, but I'm just not sure which to go for.

You have to think if the 89 needs a re-fret, then there's some additional money...I guess it all depends on what the difference in price is...
 
Pedro, the 2001's not Buttercream!!!! Yah it's a limited edition, Jon, what did you guys call that color, can help out here when you have a minute??

I tell you I have a 2001 fixed bridge and for me it's the only way to go. But that's me.

Pedro, you gotta really think about it. Take a piece of paper and write down what you want in a Silhouette, I mean write everything down. Then think about what you gonna play for music and which of these 2 guitar is going to work out best for your situation. Then you'll know which one to get.

Both Duck and Raz have great points. Getting the 98 is probably a better deal, but if you want that LE model then just drop the coin (as long as you have it) and get. But follow your heart. Trust me in about 2-3 months you'll be yearning for another one.

Well, according to the old press release, the colour is "vintage white"....

I have a six-bolt Silhouette, and it's a fine guitar - quite different from the Silhouette Special, really, what with it's slightly different body shape, 24 fret neck and more "modern" sounding pickups. I prefer it to the Silhouette Special, because I like having at least one guitar around the house with 24 frets, and as a former Jem player, I'm comfortable with the PAF Pro's used in my H/S/H configuration guitar.

24 frets...WOOO! All my axes are 24 fretters....(including my.....gah!) I had to get to this before you guys did!
 
24 Rules. When I play My Morse of Axis I am just disoriented. Wait a minuet.... I'm always disoriented :rolleyes:

I agree with the guys- write down what you really want in a guitar. Really don't need a trem? Prefer HSH instead or SSS? Then, the silo's probably for you.

Also consider the neck joint- I've got 5 and 6 bolt EBMMs and tend to prefer the 5 bolt with the rounded heel. If you play a lot on the higher frets it really gives you much better access. If not, then this won't matter.

Lastly, is the neck on the '89 lacquered or bare wood like the new ones? My 91 6-bolt Morse has the lacquered neck, and though I love it I much prefer the oil/wax/bare wood necks.

Or, yeah, you could buy my "rare" burnt apple SSS ;)
 
Decision made -

I have plenty of 'buckers with what I have - '94 McCarty, 98 Swamp Ash , and Godin LGXT.
So, SSS it is and with trem, as I love Mr J Beck's stuff......

I'll post pics when I have it.

If I can sell my 1976 'bird I might be able to afford both in one go !!......

Thanks for the advice - focussed me on what I really wanted. SSS and trem. The "LE" is a bonus.

One more thought .....

Ive seen that you can swap the whole pickguard assembly on silhouettes.
So even with SSS - would the body routing allow me to swap out the SSS combination occasionally if I wanted to , to retrofit an HSS loaded pickguard ??

Absolutely- you can get a loaded HSS assembly (there's one on ebay right now) or build your own.

I built my own, but couldn't find the molex connectors so I used two individual quick disconnects that were the right size for the EBMM connectors- worked like a charm and you can switch pickguards with no soldering:

What's the consensus on Jeff's newer stuff?

I was big into and still listen to BLOW, WIRED, and T&B...but his stuff since those got harder and harder to listen to and several of his more recent efforts hurt my ears with the techno themes.

Am I missing something?
 
(Listening to Wired as I type this.)

It's weird ... often music that I really like takes a long while to grow on me. I find this about his newer stuff, but then come to love it. First time I heard Guitar Shop, I was like, "what the hell is this?", but soon after it become one of my faves.

I dunno, the newer stuff has a harder edge, but I love his playing so I guess it always sticks with me.

Sophie in particular for the dueling solos with JAN.

Where Were You off GUITAR SHOP is another masterpiece.

Thinking of picking up the live from BB King's.

Jeff still looks 30!
 
saw him live for the first time last June in Manchester UK - during his 60th Birthday week tour.
He was incredible - I sat in middle of second row and it was the best guitar gig Ive ever been at..... without exception.
a Master...............unique technique , and so tasteful with it.
If only we could get him to play "ball" .

just ordered Guitar Shop on Amazon - the only studio album i havent got - good prompt on the postings above !!
