power amp recomendations

I am working on a project and got some wireless head gear and picked up a mackie 24 channel.
I need a power amp about 300 (min) amps 8 ohm stereo. I was thinking of Crown.
Is Crown still good ?
Anything else recomended ?
 
Your happy with the yorkies ?

I used to think they were the Radio Shack of live sound reinforcement.

but their price is really good.
 
I have the Crown CE 1000 and two JBL EON 1500 Speakers. 8 Ohms Stereo is 275 watts per channel. From the Crown manual "Be careful about turning up the amp. The amp is so clean you won't realize how loud it really is. Also there is the five year, please don't throw it out of the truck while it's moving warranty. Years ago I went shopping with a friend for a guitar amp. We played every amp for sale in Atlanta. By the end of the week I could sense solid state vs. tubes just by the headache returning. I don't feel that from the Crown. A friend of mine got an equivalent Carvin. That night when he plugged it in I remembered why I hated that week of amp shopping.

Before you buy your PA I would like to strongly recommend you try the new Bose PA at Guitar Center. The advantages, beside it's the best sounding system I have ever heard, are too numerous to mention here.

it's not my PA system.


I am setting up small live theatre. Really cool project. I get to spend other people's money (but I treat it like my own) I am really happy with the Mackie board I got. I
n this case as there are different bands, singers, and speakers who play, sing and speak at different levels (i want to get a compressor/ limiter BTW) so there needs to be "Houston Control" to keep audio levels running smoothly and seamlessly for the different acts and running the audio recording.

I tried the Bose system and it rocks ! The sound is huge from such a small system.

How are Yorkvilles ? My guitar place only sells Yorkville for live Sound reinforcement.

We don't have any problems with ours - I mean, it's only a PA amp, and not a guitar amp, so I can't say I've thought much about it except to note that we have it... It's a Canadian company of long standing, and they certain get more respect than Radio Shack up here - I've got a Yorkville 2x12" closed cab loaded with Celestion G75-Ts that I've been using since the 80s, and it's still going strong - it's as tough as my Mesa cabs (except maybe the jack, which I replaced)... Anyway, the amp does the trick for us hauled around in a rack, and it's been reliable so far, but I wouldn't go and say "Oh ya, top recommendation for in-house sound.", although I do see on their website that they sell 70V amps dedicated to that purpose...
