Pre EB Stingray with see through PG

Found a 1982 Stingray in red with see-through pickguard. The owner tells this is original, can that be?

Yeah. Towards the end of the Pre-EB period, Music Man did offer Sting Rays finished in Red with Clear pgs.

The Red is actually translucent in all the pics I have. It was offered for the Sabre as well. There's also some very early EB Basses (1985?) with the same theme.

Wow, that thing is scrumtralescent (this phrase is a registered trademark of me). Nice nice nice. For something like that, you need the redundancy.

This is a very early Ernie Ball Ray with the same theme. It would have to be 1984 (but no latter than 1985). Although the headstock logo makes no mention of "Ernie Ball", note the number of fret dots (4 past the 12th fret instead of 3). Also the string retainer is located on the A&D strings and not the D&G.

Bass Central currently has a new SR5 fitted with a clear pickgard !
Do not know if it is factory or aftermarket ...

As I bought mine used with such a pickgard (a 1998 honeyburst / rosewood SR5) I wonder if it is also possible that it was stock ?

I think you can find out the original p/g if you request that info in the serial # sticky at the top. Just specify in your questions when you give your serial #, and they will probably reply from EBMM early next week.

I have asked EBMM by e-mail and they told me the date of birth, color, fretboard but mentionned it was not possible to know about the pickguard

I'm fairly sure that a SR5 with a clear pg would not be stock but rather an after market pg as the electronics are made visible.
