Whoa! Stu left about 1999 I think - between the third and fourth albums. Nick Fyffe replaced him for almost five years - covering two albums.
Paul joined this May - they've had a new album out this year and got back from the States/Aus/Japan last week.
Paul really nails the gig.
I'm not a huge fan but I know the guys all quite well.

Hah, and I thought I was maybe a little out of touch:D Thank you for setting me straight.

Pre VS Post

This thread loose control.
So, it´s a fact, in general, post EB are best than pre EB MM.

I´d check several Stingrays in stores, pre and post EB, comparing to my Fender Precision 78, and one Stingray surprise me, an 2002 model. I´d purchase recently an 2005 model... It´s an eartquake under my fingers.
I dont know very well what improvements pre EB have over post EB basses, but it seems newer Stingrays have better specs. like the 6 bolts neck joint, 3 bands eq...

After Having over 400 Stingrays In My time I Must say The altimate for me is any Ernie Ball 4 bolt neck stingray, Although I do Like my six bolt with all the Major improvements still my fav's are 4 bolts.

Oh and Anything that Sparkles l'll buy.

The thing about EM MM's is that they are all good, it's hard to find a dog in that croud. Pre EB's.... well, most of them are kind of OK, some are bad (and HEAVY), but when you rarely find a good one you'll never let it go.

I own a 78 SR4 and I've a friend who plays a 96 SR4 so we've had plenty of opportunity to compare and contrast. His bass is definitely more refined than mine and it sounds fantastically growly and deep. My 78 sounds good but it has more prominent mids and isn't as deep - maybe thats just down to the character of the wood?

However my Cutlass eats both for breakfast - solid sounding, crisp, and loads of deep growl. If EB ever did a SR5 with a graphite neck I'd have a matching fretted and fretless in a heartbeat and never look at another bass again.

Status Makes a Graphite Neck for your Stingray 5 that's an exact replacement, I have installed a few here in my shop,

I also Have the 100th Namm Anniversary Stingray with the Graphite neck and yes it sounds wonderful, But I have recorded with both and as funny as it it Some engineers still ask for me too Play one with a wooden neck, after sampling both.

Yeah I know Rob Green through the forum I moderate at bassworld.co.uk. OBBM here on the EB forum has done just that with his SR5 and he rates the bass highly.

Thing is that I think it would be a bit of a shame to modify the bass like that but I guess there's no alternative at the moment.

I recorded a Narada Michael Walden cover last week with the Cutlass and it sounded wonderful through the desk which surprised me as the Modulus Sonic Hammer I used to have sounded quite harsh by comparison. The only bass I can compare the Cutlass to in terms of depth is my graphite necked 79 Alembic Series 1. I wouldn't mind a NAMM ray and I know where one is available at the moment for a decent price but I'm trying to reduce my collection, not increase it! :)

Hello Nick (check my sig to find out who I am ;) ). Will be popping my Nat in for a set-up son, so I'll give you a call bud.

Hello Kiwi, seen you on BW.

Welcome both of you.

I've just purchased my 3rd EB Ray and I took it up to Rob last Friday for a Status neck. I know some of you out there aren't modification fans but I got this 'new old stock' 2002 Burnt Candy Apple sparkle at a steal so I thought I'd spend the change!

I fancied trying it and will let y'all know what I think.

Hey JB1 :) I drop into the EB and Alembic forums occasionally just to see if there's anything interesting I can contribute to.
